Subject: A Conversation with the Tempe City Attorney

I followed up with the Tempe City Atty today regarding my failed
attempt to check a weapon at the library last week. Last week I went
down to the library, stopped at the door where there is a sign saying
No Weapons, if you have any questions call 350-xxxx (Tempe Police)
After talking with a couple of cops, I got a sargeant in charge of
security at some city buildings, and after he told me my options were
to take my gun back home and then return to the library or to secure
it in my trunk, I asked for the policy maker or city attorney.
He have me the name and number of the guy I called today.
Andrew Ching was very pleasant to talk to. I told him my story and
referred him to the statute Tempe is violating. He agreed with me
that the libraries didn't seem to be in compliance and said he'd
follow up with the appropriate library people and get the signs
changed. I think I lightbulb went on when I said I prefer to ride my
bike to the library. He also commented that he didn't think it was a
good idea to have librarians handling firearms. He suggested they may
get gun lockers, but that's not really his call. Because we were
having such a pleasant first conversation, I let him off at that. He
said he'd call me back when he has more information. I'll call him
next week if I don't hear by then.
I'll keep you all posted.
Glendale is too far away from Tempe to go very often. I'll have to
focus on my local lawbreakers.
