Tempe Assistant Chief of Police Jay Spangler called me at home today after we played two days of phone tag.
He explained the new Tempe policy regarding weapons checks in City Buildings.
I requested that he send me an electronic and hard copy of the new policy.
Tempe appears to be leaning toward conforming to the intent of the law.
Where there is a security guard, there will typically be a place to check firearms on-site (this includes libraries).
If there is no guard, the operator of the establishment will summon a Tempe PD who will fill out a card (no serial numbers taken). When the patron is done, the officer will bring back the weapon and hand you the card.
If for some reason the patron does not pick up the gun after a day or so, the gun will be officially logged into the property room where they do the usual checks and paperwork. There is a 72 hour turn-around should you not pick up your gun in a reasonable amount of time.
He also said that if someone enters a building with a gun and CCW and carries concealed there is little he can do, and little he would want to do. They are concerned with the trauma inflicted by open-carriers on small children.
I am concerned about what a PC environment might do to a child.
If anyone wants to do some research on Scottsdale or Mesa, be my guest. Report back.
