tax "freedom" wasn't so elusive as previously thought. Using revised statistical techniques, the Tax Foundation in Washington D.C., now says Tax Freedom Day for 1999 arrived May 3, rather then May 11 as first reported. The revision lowers 1999's total per-capita tax burden to 33.5 percent of income from 35.7 percent. That burden measures all taxes, including personal and corporate income, property, payroll, and sales.
Whether using the old or new method the group says Americans in 1999 worked longer than ever to pay their tax oblications. The date for Tax Freedom Day 2000 will be announced Saturday, which falls on the usual tax deadline of April 15.
