Alright, now I'm PISSED.

I'm away on busines with nothing better to do at night than watch TV and post to Libertarian lists. So I made the mistake of watching "DateLine"...where they ran a story about some "alternative" birth control methods.

• A device that measures hormones in your urine and tells you whether rhythm is OK or not that day.
• A new type of IUD that is hormone based, lasts for 5 years, and has little side effects like other IUDs.
• A condom which is much easier and quicker to put on.
• A "norplant-like" insert that's only one stick (instead of five).
• A monthly injection.

Then they tell you all these additional choices are available NOW in other countries. Some have been available for years.

Then they tell you all these were DEVELOPED by American companies. Many were tested in America. So why aren't they available here, even by prescription?

These towers of journalistic mentality gave several reasons for our comparative paucity of choices. You know, the drug companies _are_ in business to make money. And if they can't make their money off a product, they won't introduce it into the market. Plus, Americans really are risk-averse when it comes to birth control. And, lawyers are apt to sue for enormous sums of money over small unforseen side effects.

But they did offer hope: some of the above products are "in the pipeline for FDA approval".

What a crock! So it's the evil drug companys' fault for not ignoring the economic realities of an overbearing, lengthy, and enormously expensive "FDA approval process", and a legal system that refuses to accept the idea of voluntary assumption of risk? Maybe a little blame for the lawyers, but NONE for the FDA and the courts? Meanwhile David Brin the Cheerful Libertarian extols the virtues of a society which so wonderfully tolerates "eccentricity."

I gotta stop traveling, with all its associated temptations to watch TV shows I otherwise would not... :-) Gets my blood boiling.
