HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo says that Smith and Wesson stands to gain preference in buying guns for police agencies. I guess that is one way to force line cops to carry a gun which they have shown little interest in. Glocks, Sigs, HKs, yes. Smiths? No.

It looks as if some chiefs of police will play politics and outfit their servants with substandard firearms. Of course, as usual, the government is exempted from the law, er, "agreement." The FBI, as you already know, wanted no part of the gimmicks agreed upon when they sent out bids for their new duty pistol, a 1911 pattern pistol built by Springfield. Springfield's offering which won the contract is a moderately tuned .45 ACP. No magazine safety, "smart-ass" gun technology, no trigger lock. Heck, I wouldn't want one either.

But I have to wonder about the mechanism for the bidding on future contracts. There must be laws which govern this.

And what about all of that money that the lawyers put into the kitty to fund this gun settlement? What is their next target? Bob's Big Boy?
