Welcome To My ........

Kaleidoscope
Tangerine Dream
1967 Fontana Records
U.K. (30 Mins)
The first 2 albums by Kaleidoscope are nothing short of masterpieces and your psych collection is not complete until you have these both. Psychy vibes, great harmonies, sensational song writing and not very garage feeling...much more polished sounding. This paisley-psych-pop album will simply blow your mind! One of my personal favourite psych bands of all time and i always really wondered why these albums never made it big. IMHO this album rivals the big un's .....Floyd's "Piper", Small Faces "Ogden" and Sagitarius. They dont make em like this anymore for sure. Absolutely essential

Pretty Things
SF Sorrow
1968 Snapper Music
U.K. (30 Mins)
Here is a lovely little psych album that I suppose you would refer to as one of the "Classics" of this genre. Somewhere in the Syd Barret' era Pink Floyd and Revolver era school we might find this album filed. No question that these guys were enjoying the LSD experience when this album was conceived!

Small Faces
Small Faces
1966 Immediate Records
U.K. (30 Mins)
I remember many years ago being in Scotland on vacation visiting my wife's hometown and she aunt asked me what albums i had purchased that day downtown and I proudly pulled this one out and she was amazed that I was a fan ! She was too !!! This was the album that predated the epic "Ogden" album and a great overlooked album. Like many albums the North American version is quite different from the UK one and Immediate records has re-printed this album in both formats now for us to all enjoy as it was released. I snagged the recent remastered CD version which has been wonderfully remastered and sounds as fresh as the day it was released! Extra's included as well that appeared on the US version.

Ghost
Lama Rabi Rabi
1996 Drag City Records
Japan (50 Mins)
Ghost inhabits a very special musical space where the psychadelic sounds of the 60's acid bands and the trance-like groove of 70's German bands are molded into one swirling seemingly never-ending collage of wonderous sounds. This is the real deal my friend.......melodic, and yet mystical..and yet psychedelic. This music is the real deal and is one long magnificent trip. This album mixes a ton of great and vast instrumentation. Caution: this album is not for the light hearted!

1910 Fruitgum Company
Simon Says
1968 Buddah Records
Canada (35 Mins)
The Popsike genre is something of an acquired taste I suppose but although often light and pop-like can carry some significant psychedelic characteristics as does this album. This is a tough album to track down for sure but if you can find it you won't be dissapointed! This positive and well lit album blends popcorn like keyboard work with poppy psychedelic tracks which sounds like a cross The Monkees with The Beatles and mix in a ton of The 60's Surf Scene. The song "The Year 2001" is actually very Beatles'ish with that Sgt Pepper twinge. An absolute fun and psychy album.

Psychedelic Jumble Vol. 1
Whats The Rush,Time Machine Man?
1967 Rev-Ola Records
U.K. (50 Mins)
The fine folks at Rev-Ola Records have compiled 20 songs of very very very rare and highly collectible psychedelic songs from the 60's British psych scene. Although I will say that the sound quality can be a bit rough the pure magic and beauty of the music just pours out song by song. I know that psych collectors are always looking for old and rare material and here is your chance to own some pretty trippy and extremely rare long lost gems.

Francisco
Cosmic Beam Experience
1976 Cosmic Beam Records
U.S.A. (45 Mins)
This is a great album that was recorded far outside of the Psych scene but remains very spirtual and IMHO a very different soul-psych music which is truly astounding. Opening track "Heal Yourself" is an excellent tune and sets you up for the rest of the album. There are also 2 long instrumental pieces titled Cosmic Beam Experience Part 1 and 2 whioch feature some standout and spacey guitar, drums, chimes, and his multitude of Cosmic Beams.

The Oak Record History
1968 Oak Records
U.K. (78 Mins)
Thanks to a great music trading friend of my from Scotland (Michael), I was able to get a copy of this wonderful collection of recordings from a rare little label once called Oak Records. They were responsible for recording a large number of different freakbeat, Beat , Mod and Psychedelic bands. This 27 track CD captures some of Oak's finest moments many of which have been locked away for far too long. Bands featured include the first recordings of the Bo Street Runners, Jaguars, Pneumonia, Factory, Act, Five Of Diamonds and many others...this is amazing music and is 78 mins plus of some real mind numbing music

The Townsmen
We're Doing Fine
1966 Mousehole Music
Canada (110 Mins)
The Townsmen were maybe next to the Staccatos(later the Five Man Electrical Band) one of Ottawa's most successful and best known psychedelic band of the 60's! I was waiting for their music to be finally put onto CD and now thanks to Mousehole Music we finally have the definite statement from the Townsmen! This 2 CD package explores all of the singles from the 60's and even includes pre and offshoot material I had never heard before which is very cool. CD 2 is not all that key really but does feature some cool and rare live, Radio promos and in studio stuff as well as later reunion pieces which is very interesting to listen to. Musically these guys were pretty trippy and pretty MOD and BEAT-like all the way thru. I love the vocal harmonies and little dash of psych space they bring into their music. Very highly recommended.

The Association
Windy
1969 Warner Bros Records
U.S.A. (35 Mins)
Inside Out was the Association's third album nad was the one that really made it for them with the huge hit "Windy". The rest of the album is also quite softly psychy with some softer folk-harmonic soungs all carrying that paisley-pop like vibes.

Christmas
1967 Paragon Records
Canada (30 Mins)
Christmas were a band from my neck of the world (Oshawa Ontario) who recorded some fantatsic albums. This was the first album that they recorded and although suffers from age in the sound department (and I am sure lifted off of vinyl) does show a very young and promising progressive psychedelic band. Fans of the epic track approach will love side two of this album with a 21 mins ditty called "Jungle Fabulous" which is a masterful tune.

The Lovin' Spoonful
Hums Of The Lovin' Spoonful
1966 Buddah Records
Canada (29 Mins)
Everyone loves the Lovin' Spoonful and how can you blame them with a continuous string of big psych-pop hits and a handfull of great albums. My personal fav of the lot is "Hums" for sure with some of the most psychy pieces that they recorded. "Hums" is a fun album too and rings with a highly original character straddled somewhere beteeen the Monkees and The Beach Boys. Musically this album pulls in a nice array of instrumentation and sounds like the band were definitely experimenting to a degree on this album.

Scott Walker
4
1969 Fontana Records
U.K. (35 Mins)
Scott Engel (who is better known as Scott Walker of the Walker Bros) released 4 fantatsic 60's psych-pop albums with real vision. Scott 4 contains my favourite Scott Walker tune "The Seventh Seal" with its full orchestra and backing vocals. The rest of the album is filled with Scott's deep and emotive vocals put to some fantatsic music. With orchestra and 60's tonality , this album is a beaut !

The Hollies
Dear Eloise
1967 EPIC Records
U.K. (35 Mins)
Dear Eloise (or Butterfly as it was known in the UK) was I guess The Hollies most Psychedelic and really was their ode to Sgt Pepper's. Musically this album is a wild trip and full of some amazing songs all dripping with that classic 60's paisely-psych pop sound. Of course the vocal harmonic duo of Allan Clarke and Graham Nash are in full flight in 1967 and have a sound one wishes would never have ended.

Tomorrow
1968 See For Miles Records
U.K. (35 Mins)
My White Bicycle...what else can you say! But aside from this well known Nugget of psychedelia the rest of the album is too delicious! Of course Steve Howe (UK Prog rock band Yes) has graced my ears for years thsi will give you a bit of insight into his fit in a psychedelic band. Tomorrow the album is chalked full of cool little short songs that carry a nice little paisley pop psych sound to them. I am not sure about this mix (See For Miles) but there is a lot of speaker bouncing going on which i think adds to its charm (maybe someone can give me insight into whether I have the real mix here), But either way this album is most enjoyable and offers some great musical moments.

David Bowie
1967 Deram Records
U.K. (35 Mins)
At the young age of 19 David Bowie recorded his debut album introducing the world to this rare and talented singer songwriter. The debut for Bowie is nothing like the classic era Bowie and in fact is very surrealistic and quite psychedelic. With a mix of Mod and freakbeat vibes Bowie's debut album is an ecclectic album full of original music and some great moments. Lots of psychy organ, horns, trumpets and a heavy enphasis on lyrics and the vocals of David Bowie.

Kaleidoscope
Faintly Blowing
1967 Fontana Records
U.K. (35 Mins)
After the stunning debut album the UK band Kaleidoscope released what would be one of personal favourite psych albums of all time folks. Heavy psyched out and filled with magical song writing and a slightly more mature album that the debut!

The Sonics
Introducing...
1966 Sundazed Records
U.S.A. (35 Mins)
....so you are thinking yet another poor sub rate Garage psychedelic band ? Not at all......Introducing The Sonics is a mind numbing album that will blow your mind! Great blues- mod -like psych with a pop twist sounding not unlike a mix of The Doors and The Beatles. Lead singer is awesome with some great emotive vocals (Gerry Roslie). The Sonics blend organ with fuzzed guitar and harmonica/sax and great a real live and electric vibe to their music. Absolutely essential

Whistler, Chaucer
Detroit & Greenhill
1967 Fallout Records
U.S.A. (28 Mins)
If you are also a reader of the progressive reviews then youo may have caught the inclusion of a band called Space Opera (a later and more progressive reincarnation of Whistler, Chaucer, Detroit & Greenhill). Mojo Magazine's The Greatest Albums of all time cites this album as one of the great psychedelic albums, so perhaps I am in good company here (gulp!)...well outside of that crap this album is very cool and I guess lives up to its hype (If there is any hype that is!). This album is far away from the low quality garage psych stuff that is floating out there these days. This album is a wild sedative mix of songs that sounds like we are looking thru a kaleidoscope! This delicate little acoustic album rings tones of incense and peppermints, lava lamps and shag carpets for sure ! Musically this album covers a wild range...from a little country to a little Eastern to a little acid fuzz guitar jams. The only real bummer is that it clocks in at 28 Mins which ends far far far too soon....... If you are looking for a real beauty then snag this gem and light the incense!

Truth & Janey
No Rest For The Wicked
1976 Rockadrome Records
U.S.A. (33 Mins)
This little obscure album is full of non-stop heavy acid guitar riffing and a bass/drum rhythm section that wont stop! I only really discovered this beauty a few years back when one of my music pals tossed a song onto the stereo. Kind of a Hendrix meets psych -prog sound with a real 70's sound. High adrenaline album for those who like their psych rock hard and heavy.

Green
1969 Fallout Records
U.S.A. (38 Mins)
Green's debut album is absolutely stunning ! Musically this band mix a certain English-influenced vibe with West Coast horns and reeds and Eastern Influenced tonalities all mixing into one excellent album. This is another album that its real beauty shines thru after repeated listens. Green takes us from the mellow ballad of "Sunrise #7" to the hard psych rocking "Green" to the raga inspired beauty and my personal favourite track "Where Have I Been?". Essential Psy music for sure......get this one !!!

Rock Island
1967 Fallout Records
U.S.A. (28 Mins)
Rock Island were the pre-cursor to the amazing album self titled by the band called "RAIN" (Reviewed on my progressive pages). In sharp contrast to "RAIN", Rock Island is a vintage heavy stoned-out psychedelic 70's rock band that mix blues and 70's psych rock into one real interesting album.

July
1968 Mason Records
U.S.A. (34 Mins)
July were the result of several earlier incarnations but in 1967 solidified theri line up with Tony Duhig (JADE WARRIOR) on guitar, John Field (JADE WARRIOR) on flute and keyboards, Tom Newman on vocals, Alan James playing bass, and Chris Jackson on drums. Their sound was a mix of trippy psychedelia with strange, bright electric-acoustic textured tracks and fuzzed-out guitar work. This dreamy album also carries some World music aspects thanks to Tony Duhig who would later bring this out much more in their JADE WARRIOR project. This is an amazing album and if you have not snagged this album them you are missing out!

Afterglow
1968 Sundazed Music
U.S.A. (30 Mins)
Aferglow were the best thing to come from Oregon in 1968 and after the released of this little psychy gem fell off the planet in obscurity. The most noticeable aspect of their music is the heavy and distinctive use of the organ! Musically they are in the "Doors" and "Jefferson Airplane" school of psych with dreamy west Coast vibes and that certain little 60's tinge! A wild album for sure.

49th Parallel
1969 Pacemaker Records
Canada (35 Mins)
The 49th Parallel was one of Canada's most memorable garage punk bands to come out of the mid-'60s. Originally known as the "Shades of Blond", the band featured Dennis Abbott on vocals, Dan Lowe and Bob Carlson on guitars, Dave Petch at the organ, Mick Woodhouse on bass, and Terry Bare on drums. The fine folks are Pacemaker have compiled all their singles onto one nice CD which offers great sound. An interesting tidbit is that guitarist Dan Lowe later made a fortune in the field of multimedia sound design, as the inventor of Q-Sound (among many others,,,Roger Water's Amused to Death used Q Sound).

Apollo Sunshine
2005 spinART Records
U.S.A. (38 Mins)
Boston neo-psychedelic/indie rock trio Apollo Sunshine are one of the relatively new bands doing some pretty cool stuff. They take conventional songs and filter them through a psych-pop underground vibe creating a highly intriguing aquarium of shapes and sounds. The music on this CD will work for both the young'uns and the not so young'uns blending a perfect amount of pop and modern psych themes.

Zombies - Begin Here
1965 Big Beat Records
U.S.A. (30 Mins)
First let me "Warn You" that this debut album by The Zombies is not to be compared to "Odessey & Oracle" and really are two very different albums in structure and sound. "Begin Here" is the frist album by the Zombies and may be one of the great pure "BEAT" albums of the mid 60's ! This album has a more "Garage psych" feel to it than O&O! The album is rich is melody and features the amazing vocals of Colin Blunstone and song writing of Rod Argent. It wont take long for this album to grow on you and after a few spins you will hold this album as one of your favs. Of course the huge hit "She's Not There" is from this album and has never sounded better than on the Big Beat CD rematered re-release.

Apollo Sunshine - Katonah
2003 spinART Records
U.S.A. (45 Mins)
For me this was my first exposure to Apollo Sunshine and it simply became one of the most listened to CD's in my collection for the summer of 2004..and in fact is playing as i write this (2008...yikes). Mellotron and psych pop mixed together put to some highly memorable songs. "The Fear Of Heights" is just one of those songs you gotta love. Anyone looking for a modern little psychy album or two should check out Apollo Sunshine...

Beachwood Sparks
2000 Sub Pop Records
U.S.A (45 Mins)
Here is a band that basically came and went and left behind this morsel of modern psych-pop that will leave you speachless. Great vocal harmonies put some great psych-pop melodies that reach into the astral plains of your mind. This album has a nice flow to it too with great song and song after song. The overall vibe carries that 60's psych sound with some modern influences of maybe Travis and Radiohead. An excellent album from start to finish and this album was clearly one of the gems of 2000!
