Welcome To My ........

Herman's Hermit - Blaze
1967 Columbia Records
U.K. (38 Mins)
Thinking about what other albums were released the same year (ie. Sgt Pepper / Axis Bold as Love / Disraeli Gears etc... ), it's no surprise that this album did not get the attention that it deserves. This is a pure and pure psych pop album with lots of catchy tunes and that certain psych-fest feel. I love this album and now thanks to Eroc (Grobschnitt fame) he has re-released this gem remastered with a ton a great bonus tracks

Lazy Smoke – Corridor Of Faces
1968 Arf Arf Records
U.S.A. (35 Mins)
Here is an album that simply blew my mind when I first heard it and remains to this say of my personal fav garage psych albums. Lazy Smoke ..yes they were pretty much I suppose an unknown commodity (outside of Massachusetts) but psych collectors have coveted this album for years. Finally the fine folks at Arf Arf records (US Garage Psych label) have done a great job of transferring this puppy to CD which includes a number of well recorded demo tracks. Lazy Smoke play a psych fest of music that land somewhere in the Bealtes feel with lets say a tad bit of Pink Floyd tossed in. Without a question the vocals are very reminiscent of Lennon and McCartney especially in the harmonizations.

Sagittaris - Present Tense
1967 Columbia Records
U.S.A. (28 Mins)
Absolutely beautiful album reaching heights for me few albums ever did and is simply an essential album in any psychedelic collection. This California based band wrote under the careful leadership of Gary Usher some simply lovely tracks and then produced and recorded them to perfection. One of Unger's desert Island picks !

Chad & Jeremy - Distant Shores
1966 Columbia Records
U.S.A. (35 Mins)
Just before "Of Cabbages and Kings", Chad and Jeremy released a psychy folk filled album with strong hints of what was to come. I have always loved this duo's music and their flare for the psych scene. Just a fantastic Summer listen from cover to cover. Sundazed CD contains 13 extra tracks many which have been unavailable until now.

The Flowerpot Men
1967, Repertoire Records
U.K. (55 Mins)
Next to the Beach Boy's album SMILE that never was, the Flowerpot men had 2 albums that never were. For the first time both rare albums have been re-released by EROC on Repertoire Records with actually great sound considering its vintage. The Flowerpot Men were really only known on mass for their huge hit "Lets Go To San Francisco" the British response to Scott Mckenzie's "Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair" but also recorded some absolutely other beautiful tracks. For once they are together on the albums that never were.....The Pace Album and Past Imperfect

Gandalf – Gandalf
1968, Capital Records
U.S.A. (37 Mins)
This New York based band straddled the progressive psychedelic line and released this absolutely essential psych gem in 1968. Gandalf is a dreamy album with soft caressing phased vocals, some lovely keyboards and hypnotic bass and drum interplay.

The Electric Prunes - Mass In F Minor
1967, Line Records
U.S.A. (26 Mins)
Psychedelic albums are synonymous with being a tad short...but what an album! The Prunes teamed up with David Axelrod for this psychedlic mass masterpiece adding lots of orchestration. The end result is the greatest christian psych album ever with church like hymns and heavy fuzz overlays. "Gloria" alone is worth the price for this gem. Short little album but essential as 1 giant piece. !

Jefferson Airplane-Surrealistic Pillows
1967 RCA Victor Records
U.S.A ( 40 Mins)
Really not much to say other than this album is larger than life and along with Baxter's are absolutely essential. I always considered "Pillow" to be the pinnacle psych album and was one of the real albums that way back when got me into psych music.

Jackal - Awake
1967 Radioactive Records
Canada (40 Mins)
Early Canadian psych prog band that released this really groovy album. Drawing inspiration from, amongst others, Deep Purple, this Toronto-based quartet incorporates dazzling guitar/organ interplay reminiscent of Blackmore and Lord at their heaviest. The album is a superb advertisement for this musical genre with every track a winner. The Kellesis brothers, Chris and James, wrote most of the material and man does this album rock.

The Electric Toilet
All Hands Are Karma
1970 Nasco Records
U.S.A. (40 Mins)
Here is an absolutely stone hold stonker of a psych album from this obscure Memphis Tenn band. This unique album blends Eastern vibes with the late 60's psych hippy drug crazed tones creating a lovely and rare find. "Within Your State Of Mind" is one of the true psych greats. The Akarma CD version is a mini LP like CD re-issue with great sound production. Quirky... but psychedelically essential !

The Serpent Power
1967, Vanguard Music
U.S.A (33 Mins)
The Serpent Power’s debut album is a stone cold classic psychedelic masterpiece with the flower-popping lyrics of poet David Meltzer. The Serpent Power blend fuzz East Coast 60’s styled guitars with organ séance sounds, r & b backdrops and psychedelically harmonized caressing vocals to create some lovely and highly memorable trippy songs.

The Seeds - Future
1967, Edsel Records
U.S.A. ( 35 Mins)
Future is the most psychedelic of all the seeds albums. Tons of tabla and hand percussion with sitar and gong...what else can you ask for...

The Seeds – The Seeds
1966 Cresendo Records
U.S.A. (30 Mins)
Sky Saxon was a bit of an underground US Psych icon with his pre Jim Morrison-like stage presence and “heavy” vocals/lyrics. On their debut album “The Seeds” were sporting a psych-mod sound with fuzz guitars and 60’s musical mannerisms. Their debut album is kind of a mix of The Doors and Batman TV show theme exuding a blend of British and blues influences. A definite classic.

The Seeds-A Spoon Of Seedy Blues
1967 Edsel Records
U.S.A. 35 Mins)
A Full Spoon was the 4th album by The Seeds, drawing on yet the base psych vibes this time mixing more of a R&B flavour. Kind of a mix of the flowerpower and the blues genres in one late 60's vibe....not unlike some of the music by The Doors. Of course the album is the centre piece of Sly Saxon's emotive voice and the bands excellent instrumentation.

The Seeds – Web Of Sound
1966 Cresendo Records
U.S.A. (40 Mins)
The Seeds released their classic “Web Of Sound” in 1966 following their successful debut album which received some strong praise….Muddy Waters called them the future US version of the Rolling Stones. Web Of Sound is the album that put these guys definitively into the Garage Psych category. Imagine Psych organ, hypnotic bass and drum lines, fuzz guitars and arcane vocals of Sky Saxon and you have a good idea of the Seeds.

Kaleidoscope
.

Quicksilver Messenger Service
Happy Trails
1969 Capital Records
U.S.A. (50 Mins)
Rolling Stone magazine ranked Happy Trails #189th album in their "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time". Happy Trails was another early psychedelic album in my collection and is still to this date. They never reached this height again and is a perfect mix of psych freaked out guitar, effects and bass/drume interplay.

The Electric Prunes - Underground
1967 Warner Bros Music
U.S.A. (41 Mins)
"Underground" was the second album by the E-Prunes and marks one of my personal favourite album and IMHO most complete psych albums of all time. Tons of fuzzed out guitar, hypnotic beats with great percussion, great vocals and tons of 60's inventiveness throughout.

The Small Faces
Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake
1968 EMI Records, U.K. (38 Mins)
Ogden’s is pretty much a classic and was just one of those albums! A mix of psychedelic , prog and orchestration all mixed into a magical rock album. Complete with deadly speaker to speaker planning, highly well written songs and Steve Marriott’s acid fuzzed out guitar playing what else could you ask for. Man they don’t write albums like this these days do they !. I love this album !

Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced
1967 MCA Records
U.S.A. (40 Mins)
How could you not have a copy of this album right ! Do I really need to say anything other than perhaps the pinnacle guitar driven psych album ever ! A Classic....

Arzachel - Arzachel
1969 Demon Records
U.K. (30 Mins)
Here is a pure psychedelic gem that will appeal to fans of both progressive rock and psychedelic music. Arzachel is the mastermind of David Stewart and Steve Hillage who play some of thier most mind expanding music yet. Lovely psychy keys with fuzzed out guitar and a great set of drumming and bass interplay. May be the definitive British Psych album of all time!

The Beatles – Sgt Pepper’s
1967 EMI Records
U.K. (41 Mins)
This album should not need any review upon reflection having clearly reached mythical status unanimously from and remains to this day one of the most psyched’ up pop albums of all time. …..”Strawberry Fields Forever”……

The Brain Police
San Diego’s Only Psychedelic Cops
1968 Normal Records
U.S.A. (63 Mins)
Here is a great little US psychedelic gem that you will surely love. This is a classic example of West Coast pop-psych with tons of fuzz guitar and organ grinds. Musically these guys were excellent with a great sense of how to write a pop tune. Of course they blend their pop tunes with an infusion of psychedelic strangeness and lava lamp quality. The Normal Records CD release contains tons of great and equally eq’d bonus tracks as well. One of my fav’s for sure ! essential

Spirit – 12 Dreams Of
Dr. Sardonicus, 1970
U.S.A. (54 Mins)
The Twelve Dreams is another festi-fav. This monster psychedelic concept album carries the vintage psychy guitar tones of Randy California against some pretty wonderful tripped out tunes. Part of what makes the “12 Dreams” such a glorious album is the intermix of pop and psych-like moods and atmospheres. “Space Child” and “Street Worm” are two of my favourite tracks from this period. Brilliant music.

The United States of America
1967 Columbia Records
U.S.A. (36 Mins)
Led by the avant-garde sonic space cadet of keyboardist/composer Joe Byrd and the haunting vocals of Dorothy Moskowitz, the United States Of America found a way to permanently hard-wire space-age electronic music to the heart of rock and roll on their debut album. Byrd’s kaleidoscopic musical excursions and Gordon Marron’s searing violin orbit around the heavy vocals of Moskowitz (who sings like a mix of Debra Harry and Grace Slick). The United States of America were actually one of the first bands to use electronic effects in their music. A great album! Rad man ...Rad

The Deviants - Disposible
1968 Captain Trip Records
U.K (40 Mins)
The Deviants had a few great albums as well......Disposable is a pure psychedlic trip with some really freaked out but groovy parts. Their music was somewhat influenced by the Stones, the Mothers of Invention, the Beatles, Pinck Floyd, the Pretty Things, Velvet Underground, and even a little Charles Mingus. Absolutely essential album....Freak Out !

Barbarella (Movie Soundtrack)
1968 Famous Music
U.S.A. (30 Mins)
"Barbarella Psychedella" ..this says it all. I love the movie and the soundtrack is a great piece of psychedelia. 22 short songs with that certain candy psych pop vibe and tons of sound effects and acid drop-like allusions. Full orchestra also accents and is intermingled throughout the album and mixes well with the overall vibe. Far Out stuff !

Jefferson Airplane - After Bathing
At Baxter's, 1967, RCA Records
U.S.A. (45 Mins)
After Bathing was the 3rd album released by Jefferson Airplane and represents something of a psychedelic symphony. On this album they seemed much less concerned with belting out a hit or two and much more focus on the creative and progressive side of song writing. After Bathing is a 5 piece suite represeting some of the best work this band ever recorded.

Hawkwind - Hawkwind
1970 Liberty Records
U.K. (38 Mins)
Long before they brought us "Silver Machine" and way way back to the late 60's Hawkwind released a superb debut album that to this day remains one of my favourite psychedelic experience albums. This was the Dave Brock era Hawkwind not the Lemmy era kids....."Hurry On A Sundown" is simply one of my all time fav psych singles. Crazy and full of mayhem but I love this album ...essential

Harpers Bizarre - The Secret Life Of
1968, Sundazed Records
U.S.A. (35 Mins)
The Secret Life Of...is a tranquil but lovely psychedelic concept album. In some ways I get a bit of the vibe the Beach Boys achieved on Pet Sounds...especially on the softer parts where vocal harmonies dominate. Front to back this is a gem of the 60's and a true piece of psychedlia hisroty.

The Turtles - You Baby
1966 White Whale Records
U.S.A. (40 Mins)
On their second album, The Turtles unleashed an album of sunny, commercial folk-rock which as a kiddy boo boo I loved and played the crap out of. "You Baby" may be the best known track from this album which hits some lovely candy psych pop heights.

The David - Another Day
Another Lifetime, 1968
Dandelion Music, U.S.A (37 Mins)
Here is a very groovy album with complete originality and character from the psych vaults. The David were an LA based band who on this album blended orchestration with summer psych vibes all wrapped up in a fuzzed out raga like trip. According to Psych lore, the band actually invented and used home made futuristic instruments on this album. The album has now been carefully remastered and re-released by the same label that released it over 25 years ago (Jamie/Guyden) with excellent sound quality.

The Hassles - You’ve Got Me Hummin’
1969 EMI Records
U.S.A. (77 Mins)
The Hassles were a late 60’s psych pop band who were psyching out in the New York area and had quite a strong local support fan base. The music of the Hassles contains a charming certain naive enthusiasm and a great blue-eyed soul, covering several hits and standards like "A Taste of Honey", "Fever" and "You've Got Me Hummin'" as well as "Coloured Rain" (before Traffic recorded it) in standard Rascals style. “I Hear Voices” is almost a Syd Barrett acid drop like melody……softly psychy……

Andwella's Dream - Love and Poetry
1969 Carlin Music
U.K. (35 Mins)
Love & Poetry is pretty much (IMHO) one of the top Psychedelic albums of all time ! Heavy R&B roots and colorful songwriting all wrapped up in and around acid laced giutar solos and heavy grooves.

The Deviants - Ptooff!
1967 Demon Records
U.K. (35 Mins)
Man this a great little acid soaked piece of psychedelic history. Recorded by Mick Farren and his LSD ingested groupies of musicians. Absolutely psychedelically essential !

Bent Wind - Sussex
1968 Pan Canada
Canada (35 Mins)
...and now from the land of the Magic Mushrooms comes one of Canada's most sought after Psychedelic monsters by Bent Wind. Sussex features some pretty stellar guitar work and some wonderfully psychy tunes. Musically these guys were a mix of The Animals with perhaps Syd Barrett Pink Floyd and toss in a bit of The Doors....truely a kaleidoscope of sounds. Only draw back might be the aged sound quality for some of you but generally psychdelic music was fuzzed out anyway so there you go !

Big Brother & The Holding Company
Janis Joplin - Cheap Thrills
1968 Columbia Records
U.S.A. (45 Mins)
Heavy Psych'd out live album featuring Big Brother & The Holding Co. and Janis Joplin who work like magic together on this firery album. Rhythem and Blues based and

Big Jim Sullivan - Sitar Beat
1968 RPM Records
U.S.A. (46 Mins)
Next to the first Ananda Shankar album I would have to rate "Sitar Beat" as one of my favourite sitar infused 60's albums. Like Shankar's album, Big Jim Sullivan plays a combo of his own music and a few fan favourites including a cool version of the Beatles "She's Leaving Home" and nice psychedelically lush version of Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" and a freak beat version of Donovan's "Sunshine Superman". But I would say that it is on Jim's solo stuff and Bonus material where the real magic for me takes off. Imagine tons of Sitar played to some pretty groovy beats and really psychedelic imagery and charm. Wow! This is just a simply groovy album through and through.

Big Boy Pete – World War 4
1968 Gear Fab Records
U.K. (46 Mins)
Great UK styled late 60’s psych gem from the slightly warped mind of Pete Miller. This psychedelic masterpiece was completely written and mostly performed by Peter Miller who coined this album a symphonic poem. Musically this is kind of a quirky set yet the music is totally captivating and hauntingly beautiful. Sonically this album is very acoustic with heavy grooving bass and drum interplay set to the psychedelic landscape and a pseudo Syd Barrett like vocal delivery.

Aerovons – Resurrection
1969 RPM Records
U.S.A. (46 Mins)
The story of Resurrection is well worth telling and it was not for Tom Hartman’s passion and love the Beatles then this album would not be here. The Aerovons were formed in the late 60’s and thru a demo released by Hartman he secured a recod contract with EMI at Abbey Road Studios. “Ressurection” was recorded and never released due to some major setbacks and the band disbanding….. this album sat on the shelf at EMI for over 30 Years. Without a question Resurection is a heavy Beatle-esque allusionary album that come so close to the actual Beatles that it will scare you. Hartman love The Beatles so much that he unashamedly wore their musical influences on his sleeves. Outside of the obvious similarities to The Bealtes, this album is simply gorgeous and deserves to be highlighted. Fortunately for us there are enough ‘original’ songs on Resurrection to suggest that Hartman was a very capable songwriter and the album was masterfully recorded. “World Of You” is worth the price of the entire album !

The Moon - Without Earth
1968, Imperial Records
U.S.A (35 Mins)
The Moon’s debut album “Without Earth” is a pure psychedelic masterpiece and one of my personal favourite albums from the 60’s! The Moon was a genius of US underground garage rock legend Matthew Moore who wrote and idealized this magical concept psych monster. “Without Earth” has a little bit of everything and offers hints of Beach Boys, chunks of Beatlesque memorabilia and layers of garage-like psychedelia. The most captivating aspect of this album is the creative presence and magically surreal world created. The overall album is alarmingly reminiscent of the Yellow Submarine Dream kaleidoscope like moods and atmospheres. One of the most incredible albums of the late 60’s !

Status Quo - Picturesque
Matchstickable Messages From
The Status Quo, 1968 PRT Reocrds
U.K. (33 Mins)
"Picturesque Matchstickable Messages" is a pure classic of late 60's psych pop rock. The intro guitar solo that opens up the album (aka Black Veils of Meloncholy) is still one of the most recognized snippets from the genre.

Jeremy Dormouse - Toad
1967 Hallucination Records
Canada (41 Mins)
Jeremy Dormouse is one of the most sought after psych folk albums from Canada’s past and has finally emerged thanks to the folks at Hallucination Records. Here is 40 mins of some pretty early underground tripped out folk vibes. Jeremy Dormouse is essentially the acoustic guitar and voice of Cris Cuddy (Mr Dormouse) with a few guest musicians including a very young Linda Squires (Reign Ghost). This is a soft and acoustic album which is perfect when you are looking to chill out. A very cool album for sure.

Souls Of Inspryation
1969 Pacemaker Records
Canada (33 Mins)
The "Souls Of Inspyration" were one of Canada's most obscure psych bands who recorded a real beauty back in 1968/69. Nice hammond / organ drenched psychy prog with some wonderful fuzzed out guitar and heavy vocals and psychy harmonies...what else could you ask for? At times this album really reminds me of early Deep Purple Mk 1 era with Geoff Mann like vocalizations (Twelfth Night Lead Singer). An excellent piece of Canadian Psych history.

Stone Garden
1970 Gear Fab Records
U.S.A. (40 Mins)
Next to the Idaho Potato, The Stone Garden were the best thing to ever come out of this state. Stone Garden play a fluid acid psychedelic rock with tons of wah-wah fuzzed out guitar and great melodies. These guys captured the essence and spirit of the psychedelic era for sure and this album plays great from start to finish. One of the great US heavy psych albums.

The Other Half
1968 Radioactive Records
U.S.A. (30 Mins)
Without a question The Other Half is an absolute classic of the psychedelic era ! This wonderful album really grooves and features the stand out guitar work of Randy Holden (Blue Cheer, Sons Of Adam). This obscure San Francisco '60s band gained a degree of notoriety in the '80s when their punk-garage single 'Mr. Pharmacist' was covered by The Fall. The Other Half play a trippy “Animals’esque-like” vibe with some great emotion. My favourite piece is the stretched out 10 Mins version of “What Can I Do For You”. This album is exactly why I love psychedelic rock ! .

Tommy James & The Shondells
Crimson & Clover
1969, Rhino Records
U.S.A.(35 Mins)
I don't think anyone is not familiar with the tune "Crimson & Clover", but the rest of the album is equally psychedelically pop flavoured and showcases some amazing psych moments. Both Crimson and Cellophone Symphony was a huge deviation for Tommy James pop ballad days and shows a very different side of this artist. With part soul, part hippy and part pop, this album is a wonderful listen. "Sugar On Sunday" is a vocal harmony piece reminiscent of the Bee Gees, while "Breakaway" is a toe tapping rock ditty and "I'm Alive" is a West Coast Quicksliver'ish tune. Really creative album and lovingly psychedelic !

Tommy James & The Shondells
Cellophone Symphony
1969, Rhino Records
U.S.A.(35 Mins)
The opening of this album marks a milestone as it was one of the first albums (If not the first) to have used a moog synthesizer. Imagine a 10 Mins electronically drenched psychedelic symphony and that is only the first tune. Once again Tommy James and The Shondells create a magical music of psych dipped with Soul, Folk, and R&B tendencies. An amazing album which by design will blow your mind. This album is an amazing piece of psychedelic history and an essential album to own !
