HIGH TIMES (US) High Times was founded in 1974 by Tom Forcade of the Underground Press Syndicate. High Times was originally modeled on Playboy magazine, except that rather than catering to consumers of recreational sex, it caters to consumers of recreational drugs. Each issue has a centerfold photo, not of a nude woman, but typically of a choice grade of cannabis plant. (Although for a brief period during the late 70's and early 80's they featured centerfolds dedicated to cocaine.) When the punk sub-culture exploded, many old hippies were aghast, but Forcade cheered it on, providing seed money, advertisers and national distribution for the recently launched Punk magazine. Forcade also slapped down $400,000 for a documentary of the Sex Pistols' legendary and star-crossed 1978 US tour, DOA. Tom Focade died in November 1978, an apparent suicide. High Times is still in publication. (October 1977) |
