THE ISLAND

Sirens International Theatre launced a production of Athol Fugard's award winning play THE ISLAND at Technochoros "Ipo Skian" theatre in Athens in October-November 1996.

THE ISLAND was an enormous success, playing to packed houses and receiving widespread critical acclaim.

It is a moving and excellently crafted play, dealing with the suffering and struggles of two black prisoners on Robben Island, South Africa, their relationship to each other and to the system that has attempted to silence them.

Extraordinarily talented British director Jessica Naish came to Greece especially to collaborate on this project. Sirens worked on this project with the full support of the South African Embassy which ran an exhibition of South African art alongside the performance.

On the strength of this performance Sirens has secured a large network of support for their work.
