Art Exhibit Reception
February
13, 2002, 3:30 PM till 5:30 PM.
The Second Wednesday in February Annual Reception
Twin Towers Lobby
Mark your calendar for the Big Reception with dance, music, dramatic
presentations, and refreshments.
Have your picture taken with your
representatives, from 5:00 - 5:30 PM.
The Governor’s Exhibit runs in conjunction with the Student's Capitol Art
Exhibit, Twin Towers Plaza Lobby January 28 – February 22, 2002 (Floyd
Legislative Office Building, across the street from the Capitol).
These art works, we pray, will subtly influence the Governor and Legislators to strengthen support for the arts in Georgia’s schools. GAEA’s top legislative goal (in conjunction with other arts organizations) is to persuade legislators to include one credit for an arts class (art, music, theater, band, or dance, etc.) toward the high school graduation requirement which would allow an arts class to count when high school averages are calculated for post-secondary study and the Hope Scholarship. This would raise the status of at least one arts class from an Elective to the level of the Core Curriculum such as Math, Language Arts, Science, etc. For the entire list of legislative goals go to www.gaea.armstrong.edu and click on Advocacy then Legislative Agenda or the direct link is at http://www.gaea.armstrong.edu/gaealegisl.htm

1. King and Queen
clay figures 6 x 2 x 8” $2000 (NFS)
Inspiration for the jolly queen and king comes from a love of children's literature
- perhaps a softer version of the characcters of Alice in Wonderland. It's
obvious that the king is held in check by his matronly lady.

3 The Granite Steps
watercolor, 22” X 30,” $1200
Inviting us up the stairs is the iron railing of an old southern mansion. How
many people have walked these steps over the years? Someone told me that stairs
like these go down two sides of the landing so the southern belles could walk
up one side and their beaus up the other to prevent showing their petticoats to
anyone behind them.
4 Sunlit
watercolor, 20” X 28,” $1200
This old Savannah mansion is in reality white. You are looking at it through
the palms and discovering a magical place. It is lit by the warm sun and
radiating ins own glow.
5 Forsyth Fountain
watercolor 30” x 22,” $1200
Savannah has such wonderful parks and squares downtown. One of my favorite is
Forsyth Park where this fountain is in the center. I tried to capture the architectural
feel of the fountain by doing a close-up view. I also loved the contrast of the
cool colors in the water and sky with the warm reflected colors from the earth
on the fountain.
6 Charleston Doorway
watercolor, 30” x 22,” $1200
A dance of light and shadow on the sidewalk changing with the cool summer
breeze attracted me to this scene in Charleston. Contrasting with the natural
lines and shapes of the tree and shrubs are the architectural structures and
the ironworks which just say “southern living” to me
7 Courtyard Fountain
watercolor, 30” X 22,” $1200
The lush surroundings of a southern courtyard seemed to bring a feeling of
coolness to the hot summer day.
8 Shadow Patterns
watercolor, 15” x 20,” $600
I am always attracted by the patterns that shadows make when they go up a wall.
The theme of this painting is the pattern, not the gate itself. Although you
may wonder what is behind this iron gate and wall, I tried to leave some
mystery as to what would have created all the interesting shapes of the
shadows.

9 Temporary Escape
etching/intaglio/aquatint 7.5 x 11.25" $150
A photograph taken at a lake in Webster County, Georgia, inspired this etching.
Not your typical vacation snapshot, this image depicts a simple life and living
within your means. This is an escape from a mundane, and uneventful existence,
even if only for an afternoon.

10 New Car, New Woman, Same Attitude
etching/intaglio/aquatint 11 x 11" $240
New Car . . . is my reflection of a common attitude that sometimes accompanies
new money. The original photograph used as reference for this artwork was taken
in north Georgia around the early 1920’s.

11 Moon Dance
Watercolor collage, 18 x 24," $1000
(NFS)
The watercolor painting "Moon Dance" was created by many, many
painting sessions. I began by gluing and layering cut and torn papers (even a
coffee filter) onto an old painting that I felt just did not work. The layering
process created that "happy accident" color tonality that I always
find exciting and magical in watercolor paintings!
12 Shed
Watercolor, 12 x 14," $750 (NFS)
I painted "The Shed" in one short painting session. I had done many
on site sketches so I was very familiar and comfortable with the subject
matter, a small corrugated tin shed that sat close to fields. The resulting
painting had a simple but lyrical feeling that I find satisfying and peaceful.

13 Miss Almagene
Pencil 21 x 25" $600
This graphite rendering is a portrait of Mrs. Almagene Curry, a long-time
employee of the high school where I teach. Upon her retirement, I was able to
photograph her, and from these photographs, I completed works in pastel,
graphite and egg tempera. Recording details, textures, and value changes as
well as capturing the likeness and personality of the model were my priorities
in this pencil drawing.

14 Providence Canyon-Tan and Brown
oil 12 x 16" $200
This is the second plein-air painting I did on a crisp September day at
Providence Canyon State Park. The canyon is about 12 minutes from the high
school where I am employed as an art teacher. A friend who has been painting
for 30 years advised me to stop the painting at it’s painting at its present
stage so I wouldn’t overwork it. It was an enjoyable day of painting outdoors.
15 Man Rock
oil 16 x 20" $300
This scene was begun as a plein-air painting and finished in the studio. I call
it, unofficially, “Man Rock,” because to me it represents, a man’s head and
shoulders portrayed by rock formation. Also the color red reminds me of the
origin of man from the Creator. This scene is located in Providence Canyon
State Park, not far from Stewart-Quitman High School where I teach.
16 Fall at Cooper Creek
oil 16 x 20" $300
This scene is of Cooper Creek Park in beautiful Columbus, Georgia. It was
completed in two trips to a site near the waters edge. It is a plein-air
painting that was very satisfying to dol. I enjoyed the crisp fall evenings and
endeavored to capture the colors of the fall foliage.
Secretary of State's Office
17 Riverbend Park
oil 14 x 18" $200
This scene is approximately 20 minutes fro the high school where I teach art.
It is a view from alongside a boat ramp at Riverbend State Park between Omaha
and Lumpkin, Georgia off highway 27 south. This scene is a plein-air painting
(open air painting, done on the spot) I did while painting with another local
artist in the great outdoors.
18 Pecan Orchard
acrylic 16 x 20" $250
On the way to the Georgia National Fair each fall I pass this location near
Fort Valley; I am either dropping off my work or my students work for art
exhibitions at the fair or simply going to the fair to enjoy it with my wife.
It wonderful to catch glimpses of the peach and pecan orchards along the way. I
enjoy studying the Impressionist painters and this is an attempt to mirror
their style.

20 Amelia Island Pool and Pier Sunset #1 (double image)
Medium Photographic Computer Image, Size 12 x 24” Value $100
The summer of 2002 was a time to visit the beach with three trips to the
Atlantic Ocean. These images are a reminder of the calm recreational journeys.
Shark attacks were reported in the news, although the average number of attacks
did not rise. Caution at the huge infinite looking expanse of water is always a
good thing but being aware of the beauty and unafraid to enjoy its serenity are
more important.

23 Blue Ridges #3 Red, White, & Blue
Medium Oil/pastel on canvas, Size 9 x 12” Value $300.
The Blue Ridges are my home and I carry their images with me always. This is
one in a series of paintings that helps me communicate to others the uniqueness
of my past and of being raised in the oldest mountains in the United States.
Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda, the Afghan Taliban, and Shiites are words we were
forced to learned in the year 2001, even though they are associated with
devastation our Red, White, & Blue land has great resilience and
determination.

24 Tamarind Tree
Medium Watercolor, Size 10 x 14” (NFS) Insurance Value $ 250.
In January of 2001 I attended a watercolor workshop in St. Croix with
instructors Luca Gasperi and Cindy Male. One of our painting excursions was
scheduled on the south beach, at the Gasperi cattle ranch. The view from the
front of the ranch includes hills and foliage; behind the ranch lies the beach.
As members of the group were looking for an interesting image to paint, I
settled beside a beautiful Tamarind tree. For me, the tree symbolized strength
amidst adversity. Although strong winds had bent the tree's trunk and limbs,
its strong root system held it in place; the huge, majestic tree continued to
provide shade from the hot sun and beauty for the beholder.
25 Docked in Venice
Medium Watercolor, Size 8x10 (NFS) Insurance Value $ 250.
In the summer of 2000, I took a group of my students to Italy to witness the
abundant art and history. Although I had been to Italy before, this was my
first visit to Venice. I couldn't wait to get back home to work from the many
pictures I had taken on the trip. In this painting, I tried to capture the
bright morning sun on the gondolas and water. The buildings across the water
seemed to fade away in the light.
26 Sunrise on Cumberland Island
Medium: Watercolor, Size 8x10” Value $150.00
Cumberland Island is one of my favorite places to visit. Each sunrise presents a
new image to enjoy. With this watercolor painting I attempted to capture the
soft morning breeze gently blowing the sea oats on the dunes.
27 Yellow Dunes and Tree
watercolor 9 x 12”
The dunes on Cumberland Island are so beautiful;they remind visitors how
beaches look when they are protected from development. This painting reflects
the feeling I get while walking to the beach from Dungeness.
28 Dunes at Sunset
watercolor 9 x 12”
Sunrise and sunset on Cumberland Island can be magnificent. I enjoy watching
the colors change on the dunes as the sun goes down. I painted this sunset from
memory; therefore, the colors may not be entirely accurate. However, they
reflect the feeling I get while watching the sun go down.

29 Cramer Beach, St. Croix, U.S.V.I.
Medium: Watercolor 9 x 12" Value $175.00
While in St. Croix, I sat on the beach enjoying the morning breeze. There was
something magical about painting the ocean on location; the sun was so bright
that I found myself using very little paint—allowing much of the white paper to
show through. The shadows were changing as the sun rose. I wish I'd had another
day at Cramer Beach as I feel certain subsequent paintings would have reflected
more familiarity with the landscape.
30 Somesville Bridge, Maine
Medium: Watercolor, Size 8 x 10” (NFS) Insurance Value $150.
The beautiful display of autumn leaves, reflected in a tiny pond framed this
little white bridge in Somesville, Maine. Although I knew this image had been
captured many times before by countless photographers and artists, I could not
resist snapping a shot on my way to the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. The contrast of
white bridge against the deep green foliage made the image enjoyable to paint.

40 Climbing Ivy
Medium Clay, Value $100
A climber by nature, it seemed appropriate to decorate my tall pot with the
climbing ivy.
41 Red Wings
Medium Clay, Value $45
Nature’s designs are fascinating; in fact, they put man’s designs to shame. A
butterfly’s wing was my motif.
42 Early Leaves
Medium Clay, Value $35
I chose the bright, green baby oak leaves as a design to make a contrast with
the blue and earth color of the plate.
43 Tempest
Medium Clay, Value $55
I wanted to integrate earth and water with the following line to give a lilting
look to the pot.
44 Splash
Medium Clay, Value $35
It is fascinating to see how glazes mix with other glazes creating interesting
textures in so doing
45 Sweet William
Medium Clay, Value $25
I thought the blossoms of Sweet Williams were – simple until I really looked!
Have you looked?
46 Pink Petals
Medium Clay, Value $35
Since flowers come from the earth, as does clay, what better way to decorate a
pot!!!
47 Grey Pot
Medium Clay, Value $35
Sometimes I like to create a design with no item in mind. I wanted to make this
design asymmetrical.

49 Untitled (standing leg up right
body profile gray)
dry point print 24 x 36" $550.00
The delicate, subtle line quality in my prints forces the viewer to get close
to view them. They are delicate and sensitive, which is the way a majority of
society expects women to be, but we're not!
50 Untitled (standing leg up right
body profile brown)
print from an encaustic painting 18 x 24" $550.00
Sex and youth apparently give a woman power and make a man weak. I don't
understand how a skinny, adolescent-like woman standing pigeon-toed in a short,
tight skirt can be sexually appealing to men, but she seems to be.
51 Chorus Line
dry point print 24 x 36" $550.00
My mother, my sister, and I used to make imaginary boxes. We would put bad
people and things in the boxes and give them to god. The people used to try to
get out of their box; we would push their arms and legs back in their box.
Sometimes we would give them gifts to take with them. Gina wanted everyone to
have lipstick. Everyone looks better with lipstick!

52 The Boulder/ Cloudland Canyon
Medium Oil painting, Size 24x18," Value $500
When hiking at Cloudland Canyon in NW GA last year, this boulder at the base of
a waterfall caught my eye. I hoped to capture its massive quality, its strength
and stability. The boulder has a presence that rivals the huge waterfall that
forms its backdrop.
53 Cloudland Canyon Rock Overhang
Medium Oil paint, Size 24x20,” Value $550
As in "The Boulder" I was drawn to create this painting in order to
capture the massive quality of this rock overhang. Descending into the canyon
under structures such as this gives one a true sense of the power and strength
of our "mother earth."
54 View from Blood Mountain II
Medium Oil paint, Size 24x30,” Value $750
Climbing the trail to the top of Blood Mountain from Neel's Gap in the Georgia
mountains is a huge challenge. The reward comes in the form of breathtaking
panoramic views from the top of the trail, which are enhanced by gorgeous rock
formations. I hope this painting captures some of the essence of Blood
Mountain, GA.
55 Blood Mountain Photo-fusion
Medium Photograph/oil paint-Size 16x20,” Value $450
This was the first of a series of paintings which I have been developing since
1999 in which I have embedded a photographic image into my oil paintings. The
photos are my own. This painting contains one embedded photo taken at the top
of Blood Mountain. Some of my work contains as many as twenty.
56 Fall Sky
Medium Oil painting, Size 24x20,” Value $550
The contrast of the warm colors of fall leaves still on the trees and the
crisp, cool blue of a fall sky provide the inspiration for this painting. Does
it make you want to look up? The interlocking shapes of color areas intrigued
me from a compositional point of view.
57 Unicoi State Park- Smith Creek
Medium Oil, Size 32x32,” Value $950
This small place in the stream known as Smith Creek in Unicoi Park below Anna
Ruby Falls is as dramatic as the falls above it when looked at closely. I hope
we will begin paying as much attention to these small vignettes of beauty in
our environment as we do to the more dramatic ones. I attempt to capture them
in my paintings.

58 Winter Sky
Medium Oil paint, Size 24x20,” Value $550
A winter ice and snow storm in Georgia created a sparkling scene that could not
help but capture an artist's eye. I attempted to portray this moment in my painting.
59 Savannah Sea
Medium Oil paint, Size 24x18,” Value $500
A calm sea off the coast of Savannah was the inspiration for this painting. The
bands of colors in the sea and sky felt reminiscent of a color field painting.

60 St. George’s Marsh,
Medium Pastel, Size 8 x 10,” Value $150
This is a picture of the coastline and marsh area of St. George’s island, a
place we often go. It was a partially overcast day where one could feel the
rain coming. The colors are rich and deep, representing another kind of light.
This was a moment of tranquility and shows one of the many moods of the marsh.
61 Jane’s Garden,
Medium Pastel, Size 13 x 10,” Value $300.
I love flowers and like to celebrate nature’s color and variety. Gardens are
always inspiring to me. This is a painting of one of my friend’s garden, a
native Atlantan, whose garden is full of all kinds of flowers. The bright
vibrant colors contrast beautifully against the dark green of the foliage. It
is always a welcome retreat and a pleasure to visit.

62 Forest Shadows
Medium Pastel, Size 18.5 x 12,” Value $350.
Forest Shadows is the painting done in early fall when one can feel the beauty
of autumn. The light is yellow orange – the setting sun. I used warm earth
tones, which were accentuated and balanced by the rich dark greens. It
maintains the harmony and gives a very subtle and subdued effect.
63 Wild Flower Field
Medium Pastel, Size 10 x 10,” Value $300.
This is spring’s bounty, a beautiful wild flower field outside of Atlanta. It
is always a challenge to paint nature in its infinite varieties. This field had
a richness and a myriad of colors and shapes. I used bright colors to capture
the vibrancy of the flowers. There were so many details that I tried to
harmonize them into one to capture the mood. Everything was so perfect and so
alive.
