Essential Oils for Men

Throughout history fragrant oils have been used extensively by men. The Pharaohs gave oils as gifts to men that had performed some outstanding social deed, much as medals are given today. Romans that returned from battle were treated to a bath of fragrant oils. Alexander the Great used branches from the Myrrh tree and various aromatic grasses to make thatched roofs for his army's tents to provide comfortable sleep in a scented atmosphere. Let’s not forget that prior to bathing being an everyday occurrence men (and ladies alike) were known to cover up the aroma of their not so sweet smelling bodies with excesses of perfumed oils and colognes. (And then wondered why they had such horrible headaches!) Fortunately for today's society we no longer have to go to such extremes to gain a scented bath or massage. Certain essential oils have different effects on the different sexes because we are chemically different, therefore it can be said that the interaction of the same oils on a woman or man will be different.

Some essential oils and the effect they have on men: <
Geranium: Dispels anxieties and apprehension
Patchouli: Accentuates the masculine and reaches deep into the emotions.
Sandalwood: Is a profoundly masculine sedative and seductive oil. It is a sweet, rich and warm aroma.
Rosewood: For feelings of neglect and abandonment. Brings tranquility to the conscious mind.
Cedarwood: Releases tension and aggression, relaxing the analytical mind.
Bergamot: Sharply keen to the senses bringing composed self control.
Clary Sage: Masculine and seductive.
Cinnamon: Stimulating, refreshing, and sensually calming to the nerves. Stimulates the senses.
Lemon: Relaxing yet stimulating. A fresh, clean and lively essence.
Lavender: Sensuality

What else can aromatherapy do? How about helping to reduce stress, stimulate sexual desire, aid in the treatment of psoriasis, helping to minimize pain and sore muscles, may increase your energy level, help reduce scar severity and can help to detoxify your body. Try a variety of ways to use the above essential oils. Make a massage oil, direct inhalation, hot compresses, cold compresses, diffusers, aroma lamps or by taking an aromatic bath. Yes, men should take the time to soak in the tub just as women do - try it and you may just be surprised! As always – my first recommendation is that one starts with a good reference and recipe book relating to aromatherapy first before using essential oils. Safety is extremely important when using essential oils.
