Sir Colin Cole
THIS bookplate was designed by Henry Gray, M.V.O., Herald Painter. It is the design he prepared for the bookplate of Sir Colin Cole, Garter King of Arms and a Vice-President of the Heraldry Society. The design, based on an idea suggested by Sir Colin, was completed in 1982. It will be noticed therefore that he is shown as a CVO rather than KCVO, to which he was raised in 1982.
The main shield displays the arms of Sir Colin (Argent a chevron between three bulls passant guardant Gules armed unguled membered and tails tufted Or each crowned with an ancient crown Gold) granted in 1957 in lieu of a previous coat granted in 1944 to his father. The quarterings are Cole ancient (Argent a bull Sable armed and unguled Or within a bordure also Sable bezanty), and Cole of Isleworth Syon, Middlesex (Argent on a chief Azure three merlions Or), borne by virtue of his subsequently proved descent from this family.
Around the shield is the circlet of the Royal Victorian Order, with suspended below the insignia of a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, that of an officer of the Most Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem and the Territorial Decoration (Honourable Artillery Company) together with the jewel of office of Garter suspended from its triple chain. The crown of a King of Arms ensigns the shield, while rising from behind is the sceptre of Garter.
The two upper shields are those of the office of Garter King of Arms and of the College of Arms respectively, while the whole is surrounded by the collar of SS of a King of Arms. The motto “DEUM COLE REGINAM SERVA” (Worship God, Serve the Queen) completes the design.
