Kézdy Vásárhelyi de Kézd
His Excellency Lieutenant (ret.), Royal Hungarian Hussars, Chevalier vitéz Dr BÉLA DE KÉSZDY VÁSÁRHELYI DE KÉZD; Knight Grand Cross of Justice with Collar SMOM; Knight of the Order of St. Constantine of Naples; Knight of the Hungarian Vitéz Order; Grand Registrar emeritus of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem (Grand Prior emeritus of Hungary); Former Member of the International Commission of Orders of Chivalry.
His Excellency the Chevalier Dr. Béla de Kézdy Vásárhelyi de Kézd, GCLJ, Member emeritus of the Supreme Council, died on Friday 1 December 2000 in his home in South Africa, in his 85th year after a short illness, fortified by the last sacrament. The traditional Latin requiem mass took place on 7 December 2000 at Our Lady of the Holy Sacrament Catholic Church Cape Town.
He is remembered not only for his warmth, grace and charm, but also for his bravery, integrity and strong character; he was a convinced Christian and a chivalric gentleman. After the Second World War he had been imprisoned by the Soviets and after years in Siberia transferred to Hungary, where he remained imprisoned together with the late Primate of Hungary, His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Mindszenthy. During the events of the revolution of 1956 he was freed and left Hungary. The rest of his life he spent in Sweden and South Africa.
In 1960 Bela de Kézdy joined the Order of St Lazarus and in 1962 started the Grand Priory of Hungary in exile. Together with his friends he helped the Hungarian people in need. A few years later he was appointed Grand Registrar and Member of the Supreme Council. Our deceased Confrere served the Order during a period of 35 years and he retired aged 80 years. Chevalier Dr Bela de Kézdy rendered highest services to the Order.
We wish to express to his wife, Her Excellency Dame Astrid Countess Bolza-Kézdy, DGCLJ, Prior emeritus of Hungary, to her family, to his nephew Chevalier vitéz Zoltán Margitay, KCLJ, Vice Prior of Hungary, to his niece Dame Marietta Sipos, DLJ, Commander of the Commandery of St Ilona, and to all his nieces, nephews and relatives our profound participation in their mourning. We will always retain an honouring memory to our deceased Brother in the Order!
