THE ILLEGITIMATE PRESIDENT MUST STEP DOWN, NOW! June 10, 2005 In the wake of the latest exposé regarding Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's fraudulent victory in the May 2004 elections, the "juetengate 2" scandal involving the Arroyo family, among other acts of corruption and betrayal of the Filipino people's interests, we have reached a crucial point to call for immediate removal in power of a grossly immoral president. Shame on the liar and illegitimate president who claimed the highest seat in public office through massive fraud and manipulation of election results! We condemn the stinking record of moral, political and economic transgressions of GMA. Aside from stealing millions of taxpayers' money to ensure electoral victory, the bogus president is criminally liable for the record-high killings of peasant and labor leaders, church people, lawyers, human rights workers, political activists – they who stood at the forefront of exposing and opposing the massive fraud, corruption, economic plunder, subservience to foreign and elite interests, human rights violations, and systematic oppression committed by the Arroyo government. From January 2001, GMA frustrated the People Power aspirations for justice, good governance and meaningful reforms. Before, during and after the May 2004 elections and until this very moment, GMA's promises of economic relief and urgent change have not been delivered. Higher and higher prices, additional taxes and economic burdens weigh down like heavy cross of sufferings for the poor while the Arroyo family and its allies live in outrageous luxury. We hold GMA directly accountable for the gross human rights violations and brutal repression unleashed by police and military forces whom she has directed to do the job of suppressing all voices of dissent against her corrupt administration. Let us not allow the grossly corrupt president to continue to rule. As church people, let us pray and act together in support of the people's movement towards the vision of a truly democratic government where the people's interests are truly heard and where human rights, needs and aspirations are prioritized over the payment of illegitimate foreign debts and other immoral expenses of the ruling government. Let us do our share in building a nation where the centuries-old demands of poor farmers, workers and all oppressed sectors for a life with dignity will cease to be grand election promises. Let us all be vigilant in the pursuit of social reforms for the benefit the Filipino people. Raise the Prophetic Voice of the Church for Just and Lasting Peace!
