THYME

Thymus vulgaris

Background: Thymus vulgaris produces many different types of plants which can be roughly divided into red thyme and sweet thyme. The oil from Red Thyme and Sweet Thyme are completely different.

Sweet Thyme has more therapeutic properties and is safer to use, although both oils are very strong and should be used with care. The oil is produced by steam distillation of the flowering tops.

Properties: Antiseptic, antispasmodic, diuretic, anti-rheumatic, stimulant.

Precautions: Do not use during pregnancy or if suffering from High Blood Pressure. Can cause skin irritation, and should never be used for prolonged use. Red Thyme should only be used under guidance of a qualified Aromatherapist, and is not suitable for use of children or babies.

Physical Uses of Sweet Thyme: Cellulite, Low Blood Pressure, sluggish liver, diabetes, flatulence, cystitis, thrush, gout, rheumatics, circulatory problems, colds and flu, period problems, boils and sores, abscesses, shingles, verrucae, insect and snake bites, respiratory disorders, emphysema, bronchitis and mental debility.

Emotional Uses: Exhaustion, fatigue and nervousness.
