Background: Patchouli is native to India and S. E. Asia and belongs to the Labiate family. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dried young leaves, as oil is not present in older leaves. Patchouli was very popular with the “hippies” in the 60s, although many people find the smell of patchouli offensive.
Properties: Antiseptic, aphrodisiac, anti-inflammatory, astringent, diuretic, sedative, anti-depressant, stimulating.
Precautions: May cause appetite loss.
Physical Uses: Skin conditions such as chapped and dry skin, mature skin, weeping sores, eczema, psoriasis, scar tissue. Fluid retention, cellulite, athletes foot.
Emotional Uses: Depression, stress, anxiety, moodiness.
