JUNIPER BERRY

Junipenn communis

Background: Juniper is a hardwood bush from the Cupressaceae family and is found throughout the Northern Hemisphere, especially Canada, Sweden, Central Europe and Hungary. The Oil is obtained by steam distillation of the berries. In the past, it was used to keep away evil spirits and was frequently used as a disinfectant during the plague. The Egyptians also used Juniper in their embalming process.

Properties: Antiseptic, astringent, antispasmodic, anti-rheumatic, diuretic, detoxifying, digestive stimulant, stimulating, emmenagogue.

Precautions: DO NOT USE DURING PREGNANCY. Do not use if you suffer from severe kidney disorders. Always use in small doses.

Physical Uses: Cystitis, rheumatics, gout, sores, ulcers, hangovers, detoxifying, flatulence, menstrual problems and haemorrhoids.

Emotional Uses: Lethargy, stress, despondency, guilt and low self-esteem.
