EUCALYPTUS

Eucalyptus globulus

Background: Eucalyptus (also known as Gum Tree) originated in Australia, but is now grown in Tasmania, China, France and Algeria. It belongs to the Mytaceae family and there are between 300-500 species of Eucalyptus and it is one of the tallest trees known. The name “Eucalyptus” comes from the Greek word “Eucalyptos” meaning “a well and a lid”. The sepals and petals join together forming a cap, which resembles “a well and a lid”. The word “globulus” means “little globe”, which refers to the shape of the Eucalyptus fruits. The leathery leaves of the tree have many glands containing volatile oil. The native Aborigines recognised the healing properties of the Eucalyptus tree and used the “kino” leaves to bind wounds.

Properties: Antiviral, decongestant, stimulant, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, analgesic, febriguge, insect repellent, diuretic.

Precautions: Use in low doses. Do not use if suffering from High Blood Pressure, Epilepsy. Not to be taken internally - can be fatal. May also interfere with homeopathic remedies. Can cause skin irritation. Do not use if pregnant, on babies and young children.

Physical Uses: Headaches, cold/flu, infectious illness, sinusitis, emphysema, bronchitis, herpes, coldsores, lice, blisters, shingles, chicken pox, insect and snake bites, muscular aches, rheumatics, fluid retention, cystitis, fibrositis, neuralgia, may also help fevers by reducing body temperature.

Emotional Uses: Refreshing, purifying, aids concentration, calms emotions, gently stimulates those who are exhausted.
