Prophets Page on ELIJAH

Elijah is first introduced in 1 Kings 17:1 He tells Ahab, King of Israel, about a drought that will plague Isreal. After giving his message to Ahad, Elijah was told by God to go to a hiding place by the Brook of Cherith. There he was fed by ravens. When the brook dried up, God sent Elijah to the widow of Zare Phath. The widows son died and Elijah raised him from the dead like Jesus did to Lazarus. A forcame Israel just as Elijahs message had said. The king had a meeting with Elijah as a result of Elijah meeting Obidiah, one of Ahabs officers. Elijah and Ahab had a contest to see who was the true God, Ahabs god or the Israelite God. A miracle took place proving that the Israelite God was the only true God. Elijah ordered all of the priests of Ahabs god to be killed. Jezebel, Ahabs wife, threatened to kill Elijah, but Elijah fled to Beersheba. One night, when Elijah was asleep, an angel came to him in his sleep and told him to go on a journey. Elijah went on a journey for 40 days to Horeb, where he stayed in a cave. God came to Elijah and manifested him his glory, and then directed him to Damascus to annoint Hazael king over the Arameans, Jehu over Israel, and Elisha to be prophet. Six years later Elijah warned Ahad and Jezebel of their violent deaths. Then Elijah retired to Mount Carmel. Before Elijah was taken up to heaven, Elijah went down to Gilgal to tell Elisha, his successor, that he will be leaving him and returning to God in heaven. The two went on and crossed the Jordan river to Gilead. There Elijah and Elisha were separated, and Elijah went up by whirlwind into heaven. Elisha received Elijahs mantle.
