Rational thought can be a challenge to someone's Faith if it is used in the wrong way. Faith in God can be attacked in quite logical ways and it is hard to keep faith in light of these intelligent arguments. Philosophers like Nietzsche and Hobbes are very smart and present their thoughts and ideas carefully, logically, and understandably. Both these men have brilliant minds with great ideas explained through thought in a consise way and can easily make a person question and or lose faith. Science also is completely logical and rational. Information is taken and results are given and everything is certain if you understand everything. The certinty of science is where it can challenge Faith. Science explains the universe but cannot prove or disprove the existance of any deity but since there is no scientific proof, and all scientific proof can explain many mysteries, then it is hard to have Faith when it cannot be supported by what we know, it can only be supported by what scientists don't know, which is very hard to defend against knowledge.
1) Nietzsche's philosophy. His ideas on relative morality and will to power are very well thought out and expressed. I beleive that everyone of his ideas dealing with society are very true. Understanding how a society thinks and operates is important because you can  contrast society and objective morality with greater ease.
2)Materialism is a philosophy which states that only physical matter exists and there is no spirit or soul of a person. People., thoughts, ideas, and events can only be characterized by physical matter. Materialism also refers to the practice of overconsumption of goods. These two definitions are similar in the fact that the emphasis is only on wordly possessions and there is no room for religion or wisdom.
3) Science may seem to conflict with the ideals of religion but it is not outlandish to believe that religion and science cannot contradict each other. Science and religion can exist quite well together but only when mistakes are made by one side, it sets both farther apart from one another.
In my life are my morality and values relative to the society that I live in or do I have an objective morality based on Catholic teaching?
In order to be a better person, I need to be able to recognize how society affects my morality and how it can change my values. Values and morality have to be constant for a person and cannot change because if they change they weren't based on any hard set belief and they are just ideas. I need to evalutate my own morals and put them up against society and then up against the teachings of Jesus and be able to recognize which area I am closer to being in.
