Pooka is the adorable puppy which "leads" Anya through her journey to find her family.
Found at the crossroads near the orphanage, Pooka is also searching for home, love and
family, and does so when he finds Anya.
Although Pooka is the only character in the film who cannot speak, he is probably the
most symbolic of them all. Pooka represents Anya’s guardian angel. Whether showing
Anya the way to St. Petersburg, saving her from plunging into the water in the nightmare
scene or snatching the reliquary from Rasputin’s hands, he poses as Anya’s protector
throughout the entire duration of the film. Pooka also represents Anya’s emotions. We can
see an example of this when Dimitri says to Pooka "I have to go - I don’t belong here."
Dimitri says to Pooka what he is incapable of expressing to Anya. |
