Bartok is an albino bat, the notorious sidekick of the villian, Rasputin. He is undeniably
the comical centre of the movie, which is exemplified by his humorous personality and droll
remarks. His quick wit leaves him never at a loss for words, even if some of his snide
comments are made behind people’s backs. Although Bartok is the one who has to bear
the brunt of the madman’s mayhem, he accepts his fate philosophically.
A reluctant accomplice to his evil master, Bartok symbolises Rasputin’s good-natured
side, secretly but unimposingly attempting to right the wrongs of Rasputin’s evil schemes.
Initially, Rasputin and Bartok’s relationship can be considered relatively close. However,
throughout the course of the film, the recurrent failures to end the Romanov line make him
increasingly evil and compulsive to kill Anastasia. As he delves further away from his
"good" side, the relationship between him and Bartok becomes increasingly distant, until
the point where he is so seperated from his "good" side that Bartok finally leaves him and
says "you’re on your own." |
