JESSICA JAMES AND THE OUTLAWS (= Denise Ferri, Bernadette Carroll and Peggy Santiglia) sang back-up on most Lou Christie MGM recordings including RHAPSODY IN THE RAIN (recorded January 8, 1966) which was BANNED in March 1966 because of the line "We were makin' out in the rain." The drummer on "We'll Be Makin' Out" plays several fills that recall Lou Christie's TRAPEZE.

New York-- The newly formed Virgo Records label has just acquired the tapes of the dynoVoice and New Voice labels formerly owned by Bob Crewe. Morris Levy, president of Roulette, recently made a US distribution deal with Virgo. Says Joe Kolsky, Roulette VP, "Because of the tremendous demand for oldie singles lately, we were forced to release the following five Virgo Golden Memories Series 45 Hit Singles to add to our previous list of 20 Jubilee and Josie oldie Hit singles that were previously released on the Virgo label." If, like me you love 'label' compilations, then this will make your day. A 2CD/56-track set, it covers the activities of mid-1960s New York indie labels DynaVox, DynaVoice and New Voice, and the pickings are richer than you can imagine. Amongst the gems are massive hits from Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, the weird 'Walkin' My Cat Named Dog' by Norma Tanega and a slew of treasures from the Toys - hey, this set actually opens with 'A Lovers Concerto'. Inbetween are other hits and near-misses, and a song which has become an anthem for the loungecore/bachelor pad crowd, Crew's own 'Music To Watch Girls By'. This is quintessential East Coast pop, post-Brill Building heyday, pre-psychedelia, containing some of the finest examples of independent-producer-as-hit-machine AM-radio classics.
、Bob Crewe が仕掛けたガール・グループ。僕は Bob Crewe のこういったことを平気でやれるところが大好きなんです(笑)。この曲は1965年に Bob Crewe のレーベル、DynoVox（今回僕は Bob Crewe がこんなレーベルを持っていたなんて初めて知った）からリリース。曲を書いたのは、 Bob Crewe Production のトップ・ソングライター・チーム、Sandy Linzer-Denny Randell。アレンジはご存知 Charles Calello 。どうやらこの The Beach Girls は、 The Four Seasons のアンサーソング「Dusty」、「Society Girl」を歌っていたガール・グループ The Rag Dools の変名のグループのようです。Bob Crewe はリードシンガーの Jeanne Thomas をとても気に入っていたらしく、同年ソロ名義でシングルをリリースさせています（同CDに収録）。
今回、英Westside からのリリースされたCDは、2CDsetで全57曲（ライナーの方は56曲と記載されていますが1曲抜けています）。ニューヨークのプロデューサー、Bob Crewe が手がけたレーベル、DynoVoice、NewVoice といったレーベルのコンピレーションです。
収録されている主な Performer を挙げると、「A lovers Concerto」で有名なガールグループ The Toys、ソングライターとしても活躍の Eddie Rambeau、「Navy Blue」の Diane Renay、Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels、等など有名無名の人達のナンバーがぎっしり詰まっています。
収録されている全ての曲がいい曲とは限らないのですが、これまで簡単に聴くことが困難なったシングル達がこういったまとまった形で聴くことができるのはうれしいです。
DynoVoice、NewVoice と全体を通して、The Four Seasons のアレンジャー Charles Calello の次に大活躍しているのはソングライターチーム、Sandy Randell-Denny Linzer コンビ。The Toys をはじめプロデュース作品も多く収録されていてたくさんの楽曲を提供しています。 彼ら以外に結構貢献しているのが、ニューヨークのアレンジャー、Herb Berntein 。彼のプロデュース作品もたくさん収録。Herb Berntein が素晴らしいアレンジを手がけた Laura Nyro ファースト・アルバムでバック・コーラスをしている The Hi-Fashions なるガール・グループの音源も聴くことができます。
中でも楽曲的に優れているのは、後に Jerry Ross とも関わることになる、Gary Knight の作品達（3曲）。Gary Knight はよく達郎さんも推しているソングライター。どれもなかなかいい曲です。Sequel でおなじみの Mick Patrick と Malcom Baumgart が書いたライナーによれば、Gary Knight は Tracey Dey （この女性も Bob Crewe が手がけた人として有名）と " Dey & Knight " なるデュオ・グループを組んでいたとのこと。いつか聴いたみたいものです。
