After Edison had pushed aside his invention of the Phonograph for the Electric Light, Alexander Graham Bell, Chichester Bell (Cousin of Alexander Graham Bell) and Charles Sumner Tainter decided to work on the improvement of the Phonograph. They came up with a formula for making a cylinder that could play more then once (Not like the tin foil wrapping used by Edison) and a machine to use it.

They approached Edison with the idea and was not received well.

With that, they desided to organized the "VOLTA GRAPHOPHONE

COMPANY" in Alexandria, Va.

As a play on words Phonograph backwards is "GRAPHOPHONE".

Edison returned to his invention of the Phonograph once again renaming his Company from the 'EDISON SPEAKING PHONOGRAPH COMPANY" to the "EDISON PHONOGRAPH COMPANY" in 1887.

TALKING MACHINE / PHONOGRAPH 101

This 1897 machine was commonly known as the

"TYPE B EAGLE GRAPHOPHONE"

It sold for $10.00. The ten dollar U.S. Gold coin current at the time was known as an Eagle. This model fulfilled the needs of  the Graphophone public.  It was very durable and inexpensive .  For an additional cost of $2.00 you could get an oak lid.
