Roswell Summary

On September 18, 1999, Liz Parker was shot at the Crashdown Cafe during an argument between two customers. Max Evans, whom had been in love with Liz for years, healed the gunshot wound in Liz's stomach and saved her life, and soon afterwards Max told Liz that he, his sister Isabel and their friend Michael Guerin "weren't from around here." Sheriff Valenti knew something wasn't right, and began investigating the shooting. He found Liz's waitress uniform with a bullet hole in it, and turned it over to a friend of his at the FBI. We learn that his father was also a cop, and that because he had believed in aliens he lost respect at the department. Shortly after Liz learned the truth, she told her best friend Maria DeLuca. Isabel, Michael and Max also learned that there was another alien out there somewhere...

Liz eventually broke things off with her boyfriend Kyle Valenti, who was the Sheriff's son. It was a combination of his friends beating up Max and her developing feelings for the alien who saved her life that caused the break up. Max tried to heal Liz's dying grandmother, but couldn't. She died that night, and Max drove her home, where they shared their first hug as Liz cried.

Liz lost her journal that she had written about Max in. The group feared that Sheriff Valenti'd found it somehow, or that Kyle had stolen it to get back at Liz for breaking up with him. As it turned out, Michael had taken it to make sure that Liz was trustworthy. To this day it remains a secret between them.

Isabel disliked both Liz and Maria at first, afraid that the one of them would turn her, Max and Michael into Sheriff Valenti and expose their secret to the world. After awhile she learned that the girls were trustworthy and began a tentative friendship with them.

Michael and Maria found themselves drawn to one another and began seeing each other in secret. Their relationship was a volatile one: they would bicker and fight and end up making out.

Around this time, Max and Liz got into a car accident, and Max was taken to the hospital where a blood sample was drawn. With the help of Alex Whitman, who donated blood to replace Max's, the group was able to escape being discovered by Agent Kathleen Topolsky of the FBI who had been spying on them under the guise of a school counselor. Unfortunately due to the incident and Liz's lack of willingness to tell Alex the truth about what was going on, he informed her that they were no longer friends.

Under extreme pressure from Sheriff Valenti, it appeared that Alex might tell Valenti everything he knew. Fearful of being caught, Isabel, using one of her special powers called "dreamwalking" went into one of Alex's dreams, and to her surprise, saw that he was already dreaming about her. The two of them were both in formal wear and were dancing to "Let Me In" by Save Ferris. Isabel realized that she was the one who had the ability to "control him" and asked him to a rave in the old soap factory. Alex realized later that she had asked him out to make sure he wasn't going to talk to Sheriff Valenti, and dejected, walked away from her. Later that same night, Liz was forced to tell Alex the truth in order to keep him from telling the sheriff.

Michael broke things off with Maria the same night because she was getting to pushy about wanting to know where their relationship was going. He told her they never should have gotten involved, and that he had to be alone and couldn't get attatched. Liz and Max shared their first kiss on her rooftop under the stars that night.

Right after those events, Michael got very ill due to participation in a sacred Native American ritual called a Sweat Lodge Ceremony. The Sweat Lodge Ceremony interrupted "the balance" of Michael's natural energy and the group had to heal him with stones they got from a Native American named Riverdog, who had known the other alien who called himself Nasedo. The healing took place at a cave where Nasedo had been sick once. Michael was healed thanks to the group, and he told the others that while he had been ill, he'd "seen things." He took the stones and placed them in a pattern on the wall where Nasedo had left them a message. The message was a map of their home planet, which is in the shape of a V in the night sky. Later that evening, Max broke things off with Liz, telling her that they weren't meant to be together.

Isabel, Max and Michael had a major disagreement about whether or not to tell Diane Evans the truth about who they were. Isabel wanted her to know, and had since the beginning, but Max and Michael both argued against it. In the end they won out, and Isabel and Max's mother still does not know that they are aliens. At the same time as the debate over whether or not to tell Isabel's mother was going on, Michael and Maria worked out some of their problems but didn't get back together.

Isabel and Alex eventually became friends, ever-so-slowly, though he wanted more and Isabel kept pushing him away, fearful of becoming attatched to someone she may eventually have to leave.

Liz won a radio station contest that unbeknownest to her, Maria entered her in. The prize was a blind date "of her dreams." A jealous Max watched with the rest of Roswell as she kissed the guy and got drunk from one sip of beer (apparently aliens have a *very* low tolerance for alcohol). He bonded with Liz's ex-boyfriend Kyle, who was also drunk. The same night as Liz's blind date, Michael and Isabel try to contact Nasedo by setting an alien symbol on fire and letting it burn.

Michael came to school one day with a black eye and Max healed it for him. Michael admitted that his foster father, Hank Guerin had hit him, and that this hadn't been the first time. Max and Isabel encouraged him to talk to Sheriff Valenti or their father and ask for help, but he refused. During a confrontation with Hank, Michael used his powers to keep Hank from hurting Isabel and Max, and was forced to find someplace else to go. That night he went to Maria's window, crying and hurt and afraid, and they spent the night together (platonically).

That same night Nasedo killed Hank. Maria's mother caught Michael and her together in bed (though they were ONLY sleeping), and freaked out. Michael left and was later arrested for the disappearance of his foster dad. Maria and her mother were able to confirm that Michael had been at their house and couldn't have had anything to do with Hank's disappearance. Nasedo shape-shifted into Hank and told Sheriff Valenti he was leaving town and wasn't taking Michael with him. With the help of Max and Isabel's father (who's a lawyer), Michael was able to petition the courts and sign a paper that allowed him to live on his own without parental supervision. He got his own apartment and began working at the Crashdown as a cook.

Max and Liz found out they couldn't stay apart and soon wound up back together. Liz began having flashes (visions) of things (like the 1947 crash) as she and Max kissed. Michael and Maria got back together under the idea of trying to learn information about the aliens' past. She didn't receive any visions from him, though she lied and said she did. They fought, but later made up. Liz had a vision of something buried deep in the desert, and she and Max went out alone to find whatever it was. Isabel showed up on Alex's doorstep when Liz and Max disappeared, and under the guise of trying to cause a flash of their missing friends whereabouts, kissed him for the first time. She walked away smiling.

Max and Liz, while in the desert that night, had found an orb buried deep in the ground with some sort of symbol on it. They gave it to Michael to hide it at his apartment.

It wasn't long after this that Tess Harding showed up in town and immediately befriended Isabel. She also seemed to take an interest in Isabel's brother Max.

Agent Topolsky resurfaced in town. She warned them that they were all in danger, that they were being hunted by a government agency of alien hunters. She convinced Michael to meet her at Buckley Point and bring the orb with him because she had one just like it in her possession. Maria found out that he was meeting her and insisted on going with him. She left a note for the others about the meeting, and they followed them there. When they got to Buckley Point, Topolsky was nowhere in sight. Michael and Max fought about Michael breaking their promise not to meet Topolsky because she wasn't trustworthy. Michael dropped the orb during the fight. Sheriff Valenti showed up at the meeting place, along with Nasedo who was disguised as a doctor. He told the group that Topolsky was his patient and he was treating her for a mental illness and that anything she's said should be disregarded. As the group is leaving, Sheriff Valenti spots the orb, and picks it up and takes it with him. Topolsky is later picked up by some men in a dark car and abducted, and is now presumed dead.

Max finds himself irresistably drawn to Tess, and they kiss one night in the rain as a horrified Liz looks on. He tells them all that he wasn't in control of his own mind, and they do some investigating. Liz (without Max's knowledge), goes to Tess's house and tells her they need to talk. She tells Tess that she's in love with Max, and Tess apologizes about what happened. When Tess goes to get her something to drink, Liz plants a camera in her house. She opens a box sitting on the floor and finds all kinds of pictures of Max inside. Unfortunately, Tess's father Ed Harding startles Liz and she jumps up, and accidently breaks a statue in the house. He insists that she stay for dinner even though she protests. She finally agrees and says she needs to call her mother and let her know she won't be home for dinner. She calls Max instead, and through a coded conversation, he figures out that she's at Tess's and is in some kind of trouble. Max shows up and "rescues" her. They all return to a warehouse across the street from Tess's and watch the video survelliance from the camera Liz planted.

As it turns out, Tess is also an alien, though at the time, they thought she was Nasedo in disguise.

Isabel began having R-rated dreams about her and Michael together, and Michael began having the same dreams. Isabel, desperate to get the dreams out of her mind, told Alex she was ready to take their relationship to the next step, while Michael asked Maria to go steady. Isabel feared she was pregnant as a result of the dreams.

Tess, who was later revealed to be the fourth alien that night in the pod chamber, informed them that they all had "destinies" to attain. Tess told Max that she was his wife on their planet in their past life, and she told Isabel and Michael that they were destined to be together as well. She assured him that Isabel can't get pregnant from the dreams she had of Michael.

Nasedo shape-shifts into Max and wisks Liz away under the assumption that "they need a weekend away together." She figures out that it's not Max, and demands to know why she's been kidnapped. He tells her he's drawing out the government agents after Max and the others so he can kill them.

Max, Isabel, Michael and Tess race after their trail, Max upset and afraid of what Nasedo might do to Liz. They meet up at a carnival where Liz escapes from Nasedo-Max by running into a funhouse of mirrors. The alien hunters find them there, too. Just as Max and Liz escape, the other Max is taken by the agents. Unfortunately, as it turns out, it was the real Max who got taken.

The leader of this group of alien hunters was Agent Pierce. He had an orb just like the one that Max and Liz had found in the desert that night (the one that Topolsky originally had before she died), and commanded Max to show him how it worked. When Max didn't (because he couldn't), Pierce and the other agents tortured Max for hours. Using Isabel's dreamwalking abilities, Tess's mind manipulation, Michael and Nasedo eventually rescued Max, though Nasedo was shot several times and for awhile assumed dead. Sheriff Valenti also had a great part in helping Max escape, and he later learned that the teens were aliens.

As the entire gang hid out and with the help of Sheriff Valenti, they formulated a plan to stop Agent Pierce and rescue Nasedo, whom Tess claimed "can't die." Pierce nearly killed Sheriff Valenti, but Michael used his powers and accidently killed Pierce in the process of saving Valenti. Unfortunately, Sheriff Valenti's son Kyle was shot during the blowout, and the sheriff begged Max to save his life as he had done with Liz. Max did so.

Michael broke up with Maria, afraid that being around her would put her in danger and he "loved her too much" to let that happen. Isabel hugged Alex, who wished her good luck, as she, Max, Michael, Liz and Tess went off to find Nasedo's body. Once they did so, they took him to the pod chamber (the cave where their pods had been hidden until 1989), and healed him with the stones from their planet. Nasedo took the form of Agent Pierce so no one would suspect what had really happened to him, and so he could keep tabs on the other alien hunters of the government group.

Max decided it was to find out what the orbs they had did, and using their collective powers, the four aliens concentrated as Liz watched and the orb projected an image of Max and Isabel's real mother. She informed the group that their planet was under war, and that the four of them had been killed in that war. She told them that their D.N.A. had been mixed with human D.N.A. and they were sent back to earth--the royal four: Max, the leader, with his bride, Tess, Max's sister, Isabel, and Max's first-in-command and Isabel's betroved husband, Michael. Together the four of them were to find their enemies on earth, and help end the war, in hopes that one day they would return to their planet and rescue their people.

Liz, whom had been in silent shock during the entire incident, started to leave, but Max stopped her. She told him, however, that he had a destiny and that it was not with her. With one final kiss, Liz walked away from him without looking back.

Little did the Royal Four know that when they used the orb to receive the message it set off a silent alarm to aliens all over the world, thus ending season 1 of Roswell.
