Jake Blues and The Process of Knowing | ||||||
Jake Blues from The Blues Brothers demonstrates the process of knowing. Jake, recently our of prison, visits the nun who runs the orphanage in which he grew up. During the visit, he hears that she needs $5,000 to pay the the taxes or otherwise she will have to close the orphanage.(1) Jake then puts this need into the category of problems he can solve somehow, because he has gotten money before.(2) He knows that this is another thing for him to do. He immediately evaluates the information and realizes that, because the nun needs the money within a few weeks, this need belongs at the top of his list of priorities.(3) He thinks getting the money is important because he knows he ought to give this favor in return for the nun’s kindness in raising him and his brother Elwood. His decision is based upon past experiences, and dictates that getting this money is a high priority. However, his course of action is limited, for he is accustomed to stealing money, and the nun says she does not want his stolen dirty money. So Jake and Elwood decide to get the band back together, the blues band Jake and Elwood led before Jake went to prison. However, his task is not easy because the members have all gone their separate ways and do not want to break their current commitments to join the band again. Jake mush choose his words carefully, trying to sell the members on the idea of fame and grand performances. (4)
The members agree to rejoin the band. Hoping to God that his idea will work, Jake sets up a large concert with his band playing, hoping to raise money for the nun.(5) His idea prooves to be a huge success, and a producer gives him more than the needed amount of money on the spot, as well as the house having sold out. Jake gets the needed money and pays off the orphanage’s debts before going to jail for breaking every traffic law on the way to the office at which they pay the money. 1 Perceiving information through hearing. 2 Categorizing information. Jake puts this information into the category of jobs to be done. 3 Evaluating. Jake determines this need to be highly important 4 Symbolizing. Note that his symbolizing is not truthful, however. This is a weakness in the argument, but Jake nevertheless carefull chooses words to represnet what he wants the members to hear. 5 Testing. He puts his idea to the test to see if it works, and it does, for he gets the needed money |
