"The Human Condition" Webassign: Libing a Deliberate Life |

Junior Theology | ||||||
Many great thinkers have discussed living deliberate lives. Atistotle spoke of two types of men: the first are like a boat at sea without a rudder and not in command of their vessel but rather go wherever the waves take them, and the second are men who have a rudder and steer their own course; his metaphor can be applied to men and life. Pascal said men get caught up in distractions so as not to have to think about the larger questions of life or whether they are living deliberate lives. Socrates gave an even more powerful message: "The unexamined life is not worth living." I too am called to live a deliberate life of reflection, right choices, and control over all aspects of my life. Do I ? In the many areas of my life, I range from nearly complete control to nearly no control. In the areas of my education, the Prep News, academics and my faith, I largely steer my ship. However, I am much more a ship at sea, carryed by the waves alone, in the regions of exercise, sexuality, trueness to character, eating, and staying on top of schoolwork. Finally, between those two extremes, my faith, wrestling, treatment or others, and many others sit, somewhat and sometimes controlled by me, somewhat and sometimes floating rudderless. Thanks to this course, I have begun to examine my life more consciously, more often, and much more thououghly. I try to use the examin period of the day to reflect on the day to that point, about where i have steered my ship and wehre the waves have led my ship. I reflect before acting and think about my life, what it means and how it will affect myself and others. I also talk to others about the philosophy we have learned. I am trying to take control of my life through reflection and self-examination. Finally, I must act upon my reflection and new knowledge for it to mean anything. I have to now, knowing what areas I most need to improve upon and take more control of, have to find ways to take control. I can strive to be more respectful or women and not buy in to society's ideas of sexuality. I can form a positive habit of exercise and eat more healthfully. I can ignore what others say and what they are like, and be my true self in everything I do, around everyone I know and meet. I can waste less time and get on top of my schoolwork, and do whever it takes to stay there. In total, I can strive to wast less time and be more productive in my areas of laziness, and be true to my morals in the areas of sexuality and self-truth. |
