Journal 4Q-2

1. Here at SLUH I see many of the 10 building blocks of Catholic Social Teaching. I see The Principle of the Common Good. Kids at sluh take part in CSP where they go out and help those in need. It shows respect to the community as a whole. I also see the Principle of Human Equality which is showing that all people are equal. We can see this because each class gets a president, pastoral and social rep, as well as teams and clubs that they are allowed to play on. Everyone has a chance to do these things. There are no Favorites. I understand for cut sports that someone may not be accepted, but they had the chance to try and make the team, and they could have given it there all.
I also see 2 of the building blocks that are not at sluh. Such as Respect for Human life. Up till this year I would not have mentioned this not being here, but this year I have heard of Freshman harrasing other Freshman, and a Sophmore who had to be escorted off of Sluh in fear he would try and hurt someone. The Prep news brought these to my attention, as did the letter sent out by the Principal about the sophmore. The second Building block that I dont see at Sluh is the Principle of Stewardship. We are supposed to be moraly responsible for the Enviroment, but I see trash in the hallways at Sluh, or people get their stuff stolen out of their gym lockers. This needs to change at SLUH.

3. I want to remember the idea of the Bad Samaratin. David Cash saw his friend grab a young girl and take her into a bathroom stall. He left before anything happened but when his friend told him that he murdered the girl, David did nothing. I find this to be repulsive. He should have realized what was going to happen. I dont think he can come to the fact that what he did was moraly wrong. He keeps pushing that he did nothing wrong, which is legally true, but he should have known better then to just walk out on a situation like that. It would have been better if he had told the police on his friend. His friend committed a murder, but David did nothing to help catch his friend Jeremy, or to do justice for the little girl. We saw the movie clip about him, and I agree with the students that Im disgusted that he feels nothing for the girl or her family.

I also want to remember Fr. Robert Huse and his Idea's. He stated that Pride is the ultimate sin. He probaly said this because if you are too proud then you will have no will to be forgiven for any mistakes you may have done through out your life, which is just like an "Obtuse Spirit". Jesus will forgive us all but we need to want to be forgivin.

4. Are we taught the 10 building blocks as kids? I believe that we are, because most of these things seem to be common curtesy. It might be the way that i was raised but I generaly follow most of the rules without even thinking about it. I was taught it at School, Home, in Scouts, and other places throughout my childhood. 1
