Journal 1: What is Faith

By Andrew Connor

1)What is faith compared to Faith? faith is a deep trust and belief in someone or something. However this has in itself a risk. How can we know who to trust and who not to? So as Catholics, we examine who or what the thing, that we are putting our trust into, is and see if it would be reasonable to put our trust in them. Faith is an intellectual assent to a loving God and His revelation. So we can say that faith is putting trust into to someone while Faith is using your intellectual power to put trust that there is a God.

1 key idea I would like to remember from this section is from Inside the Mind of an Iraqi Suicide Bomber. This article made me rethink if I was a person of faith. Then I realized that it was an extremist point of view. I know that Marwan is an extremist, but I never thought that the suicide bombers did it mainly for their religion, and killing Americans was actually the second goal in their Jihad. The extremists believe that the ultimate death for them is the martyrdom of doing jihad in a fashion to kill others with them self.
The Second Idea I would like to remember is about Aaron Feuerstein. He owned Malden Mills a factory that burned down in 1995. He had the decision to retire with his $300 million insurance money or to rebuild the factory allowing all his workers their jobs back. He decided to pay his employees for 60days without work while he rebuilt the factory. In the end Feuerstein’s company, Malden Mills, was taken public by the bank and so he no longer owns it.

I believe this picture really shows the meaning of faith because the man hanging really has to put his faith in the man that is helping him back up over the cliff edge. It would be a hard thing to put your life in someone elses hand and not have some faith in that person.

These talks of faith compared to Faith matter to me now because as a 17 year old I am meeting lots of new people and sometimes it is hard to figure out who to trush and who not to. Some person I might have had trust it, I could find out smokes or drinks illegaly. Not only would I lose my faith in that person, he/she ruins it for others that I might have trouble trusting thinking that he/she could smoke or drink illegally.
