The American Red Cross, on the otherhand, was the first Red Cross group to help in disaster aid that was not caused by war, such as a natural disaster. One of the more recent projects that the American Red Cross helped with was helping those hit by Hurricane Katrina. The American Red Cross went to help rebuild the area, and give food, clothing, and shelter to those that lost homes. This was the biggest single disaster reflief movement in the American Red Cross's history. Another natural disaster that the Red Cross had volunteers help at was the Mississippi River flooding St. Louis in 1993.
The American Red Cross was started in 1881, in Washington DC. The Red Cross provided first aid, water safety, and public health programs before World War One. This meant that volunteers would train classes in these certain areas so they would be able to help in a time of need. Today Red Cross offers programs in CPR AED courses, HIV AIDS education, and gives support to modern day disaster victims. In World War 2 the American Red Cross started getting blood to donate to the army which was used during the war. Some of the other wars the American Red Cross helped with include, The Korean Conflict, The Veitnam War, and The Gulf Wars. The Red Cross sends nurses to enlist in the army, as well as sends supplies to the soldier that are fighting.
