Chapter 6
Setting Preferences
There are two Preference pages that can be accessed via the
Tools/General Prefs and Tools/Flashcard Prefs menu
options from the main reader screen.
You can set the following preferences:
General Preferences
- Search Dicts
There are two kinds of dictionaries: Name Dictionaries and
Non-Name Dictionaries. Name Dictionaries contain only Japanese
names. You can use this option to pick which dictionaries to
search.
- Input Mode
This option determines what input mode is used for manual
dictionary lookups. Choose from either Kana, which presents an
on-screen kana keyboard, or Romaji, which uses a standard text
field which you fill in with Romanized Japanese text.
- Output Mode
This option determines how the pronounciation of dictionary words
is displayed. If set to Kana, Japanese kana characters are used
to display the prounciation. If set to Romaji, the romanized
form is displayed.
- 1-Hand Input
Enables or disables One-Handed Input
mode, which allows you to operate Dokusha with the Palm device's
hardware buttons.
- Battery Meter
If enabled, shows a miniature battery meter in the corner of the
main reader screen. Useful for keeping an eye on battery voltage
while using Dokusha for extended periods of time.
- Find Button
Determines the behavior of the Find button on the main reader
screen. Choose from one of:
Find First - Find words starting
with the currently selected text in the document you are reading.
Find Exact - Find words exactly
matching the currently selected text in the document you are
reading.
Find Longest - Try to find the longest
available matches starting at the currently selected text position.
Manual - Pop up an input field to
perform a manual search.
Kanji - Look up the currently selected
Kanji character.
- Scroll Amount
This option determines whether the Next and Prev buttons (and the
up/down hardware buttons) scroll by a single line or an entire
page.
- Smooth Edges
Only has an effect on color devices. If enabled, applies one of
four possible levels of antialiasing to Japanese characters. This
can help improve visibility on devices with "sharp" pixels, but it
slows down the display a bit.
- Color Theme
Only has an effect on color devices. Allows you to change the
colors used in the main reader screen.
Flashcard Preferences
- Flashcard Type
Pick from either Simple or Auto Info. This determines what
happens when the Auto button is selected in flashcard mode. If
the Flashcard Type is set to Simple, the flashcards are
automatically shuffled through and presented to the user. If
Auto Info mode is selected, in addition to this after a flashcard
is displayed, its dictionary information will be briefly
displayed before showing the next flashcard.
- Flashcard Time
This option determines how long each flashcard is displayed when
the Auto button is selected in flashcard mode.
- Lookup Time
If the Flashcard Type is set to Auto Info, this option determines
how long the dictionary information will be displayed for each
flashcard.
- Quiz Mode
Determines how flashcards are presented:
- Kanji: The kanji characters are displayed
- Kana: The kana characters are displayed
- English: The English meaning is displayed
