Chapter 7
One-Handed Input Mode
Dokusha has basic support for one-handed use. If you wish, you can
operate the program just by using the 6 hardware buttons on your Palm
device. This is useful if you would like to read Japanese texts on a
crowded train, or if you just can't be bothered to tap the screen.
Currently the following screens can be operated in one-handed mode:
- The main reader screen
- The dictionary screen
- The kanji details screen
To enable one-handed input mode, you must go into the
General Preferences page and enable the
"1-Hand Input" preference. This allows you to use all the hardware
buttons on your Palm device to control Dokusha, but prevents you from
switching applications using the buttons (you can still switch
applications using the silkscreened Applications or Calc buttons).
In this chapter, the hardware buttons are named as follows:
- Button 1: The leftmost button (Date Book on most
devices).
- Button 2: The second button from the left (Address Book).
- Button 3: The third button from the left (To Do).
- Button 4: The rightmost button (Memo Pad).
The main reader screen
The hardware buttons have the following effect in the main reader
screen:
- Button 1: Successive presses move the selection down the
screen one line at a time.
- Button 2: Successive presses move the selection to the
right one column at a time. Can only be used after the correct row is
selected using Button 1.
- Button 3: Extends the selection by one character.
- Button 4: Searches on the current selection. Has the same
effect as tapping the Find button at the bottom of the screen. Note
that you can change the function that is executed in the Preferences.
The dictionary screen
The hardware buttons have the following effect in the dictionary
screen once you have looked up a word:
- Button 1: Successive presses select successive Kanji
characters in the dictionary entry at the top of the screen.
- Button 2: Same as Button 1.
- Button 3: Cancels the dictionary lookup and returns to the
previous screen.
- Button 4: Looks up details for the selected Kanji character.
The kanji details screen
The hardware buttons have the following effect in the kanji details
screen:
- Button 1: Same as pressing the Find First button.
- Button 2: Same as pressing the Find Any button.
- Button 3: Cancels the Kanji Details screen and returns to
the previous screen.
- Button 4: Same as Button 1.
