Chapter 9
The JIS Browser

The JIS Browser lets you view all the characters in the JIS (Japanese)
character set. Each Japanese character is identified by a 4-digit
hexadecimal number. The JIS Browser screen divides the JIS character
set into 94 pages of 94 characters each. The pages number is given by
the high byte (first two digits) of the JIS code and ranges from 21
hexadecimal to 7E hexadecimal. Because of the limited screen size of
the Palm device, each page is subdivided into 4 "screens", each of
which can display up to 24 characters.
The navigation buttons at the bottom of the JIS Browser screen let you
move around the JIS character set:
- -scr: Go back one screen. If already at the first screen
on a page, go to the last screen of the previous page instead.
- +scr: Go forward one screen. If already at the last
screen on a page, go to the first screen of the previous page instead.
- -page: Go back one page. Wraps around to the last page if
you try to go back from the first page.
- +page: Go forward one page. Wraps around to the first
page if you try to go forward from the last page.
- OK: Finish browsing and go back to the main Dokusha screen.
You can tap any JIS character in the JIS Browser screen to get more
information. For Kanji characters, this takes you to the
corresponding Kanji Details screen. For hiragana and katakana
characters, it gives you the character's romanization. For all other
characters, it simply displays the JIS code.
Here is a breakdown of what is in each JIS page:
- Pages 21 and 22 - punctuation and graphic symbols
- Page 23 - numbers and letters
- Page 24 - hiragana
- Page 25 - katakana
- Pages 26 and 27 - Greek and Cyrillic characters
- Page 28 - graphic symbols and small letters
