Chapter 1

Installing Dokusha on your Palm Device

A full installation of Dokusha containing everything except the Places & Names dictionary takes approximately 5392k of RAM (the Places & Names dictionary adds another 4462k). However, Dokusha is distributed in a modular format so you can install only what you need if you lack a lot of free RAM.

Dokusha consists of the following modules:

To install Dokusha, simply choose which modules you want to use and install the corresponding databases. You can always add more modules later if you decide to.

Getting the Places & Names dictionary

Since the Places & Names dictionary is fairly large and not everyone will want it I have not included it in the basic distribution. You can download it from my web page at http://www.geocities.com/andrew_brault/dokusha/.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to have a full installation of all standard Dokusha components PLUS the name dictionaries, you need to have approximately 9854k of free RAM on your machine. Therefore you will need a Palm device with either at least 16 Megabytes of internal RAM (for example, a Visor Pro or an upgraded Palm device) or a standard 8 MB device plus at least 8 MB of Flash memory (for example, a Visor Deluxe/Visor Neo with an 8 MB Flash Module).

Installing Dokusha to Flash RAM

All Dokusha databases except the main dokusha.prc program database can be installed to internal Flash RAM or a Handspring Flash Memory Module. However, Dokusha does not currently support external memory cards such as those used on the Palm m500 series. You can still install the Dokusha databases to main memory, of course.

Here is how to install Dokusha on a Handspring Visor with a plug-in Flash Module:

  1. Download dokusha.prc (the main program file) to your device. This file must be kept in main RAM and not run from Flash memory. However, you can keep a copy of it in Flash RAM for backup purposes.
  2. Download all other Dokusha .prc databases you wish to install. If you don't have enough main memory to hold them all at once, you can install a few databases at a time in batches.
  3. Use the File Mover application to move the newly installed databases under the Dokusha application to the Flash Module. Again, be careful to not actually move the Dokusha program file.
  4. You should now have a working Dokusha installation running from the Flash Module.

Upgrading from a previous version of Dokusha

Extensive changes have been made to Dokusha in Version 1.5. Therefore, if you have installed a previous version of Dokusha you will need to completely remove the old version before upgrading. Here is how to do it:

  1. If you installed Dokusha to Flash memory or a Handspring Flash Module, use the appropriate software to delete all the Dokusha databases from flash memory.
  2. Use the Delete menu option from the application launcher to delete the remaining Dokusha application files.
  3. Proceed with a fresh installation as above.

Extra font files

In Version 1.5 I have provided 3 different 16x16 font files for you to use. Dokusha only supports one font of each size at a time but you can pick which font you want to install. They are as follows:

Note that there is still only one 24x24 font available. If there is any demand I can include some more in the next release.
