K & K skated Sept.21 at the grand opening of the new arena in Vancouver (GM Place). They were the only skaters performing among the many musical acts (Sarah McLachlan, Blue Rodeo, Shania Twain, David Foster etc.) They were forced to skate on a tiny strip of ice down the middle of the rink, since the top and bottom thirds were taken up by the stage and floor seats respectively. I guess such a hardship was okay since they only had to perform one number each and were probably well paid to do it.
Kristi performed Power of Love in the gold, high-necked sequined dress seen many times before. She managed a couple of double axels and a triple toe loop, and got an enthsiastic reception (except the announcer mistakenly called her the 1988 Olympic champion). Kurt did the Love theme from St. Elmo's Fire performed live by David Foster and the symphony. He wore a plain red shirt with black pants and did the exact same jumps as Kristi. He almost slipped into the audience on some footwork though.
Both K & K came out for the finale curtain call. Thought they might skate a number together because the news showed them practicing the day before and they seemed to be doing a lot of lifts, but they settled for doing some jumps and spins together while Foster played Man in Motion. They were totally out of synch but seemed to be laughing and having a good time.
At the end, a singer from the Nylons convinced Kurt to hoist Kristi onto the stage where she danced with the singers while Kurt watched below. Kurt finally convinced them to throw Kristi back down into his arms, and he carried her around for a few spins before they all took their final bow.
