Stars On Ice

Boston, MA - December 30, 1999
Fleet Center

Review by: Sandee

I'll just go ahead and give my thoughts on the whole show. I never take notes since I feel it takes away from the enjoyment, so I can't remember jumps and such. One thing though - Paul Wylie was sitting in my section!!! I tried to see if his wife Kate was with him, but couldn't tell. Kristi gave him a big hug at the end of the show. He looked great!

First off, this venue is WAY better than Worcester Centrum. The ice size seems more intimate for some reason (plus parking was awesome - which has nothing to do with the show but was a nice surprise for me). I will always go to the Fleet Center over the Worcester Centrum from now on.

There were so many great moments, I can't list them all. Overall, this was a much better show than last year IMHO. Glad I went. Perhaps the cast just needed a little time to gel. There were less "skits" (which I hate anyway - with the exception of the Olympics parody that they did 2 or 3 seasons ago) and more skating. In not particular order, here's my review:

Kurt: The clown program is much more impressive live than on television. I really am glad I got a chance to see it. The timing needed to match the intricacies of the music is considerable. My aunt (who rarely watches skating but is a music aficianado was very impressed with this number).

There was an odd number between him and Tara where she sort of pines for him to a song that has lyrics "He's got a way about him" while he acts kind of goofy. It seemed disjointed somehow, I can't put my finger on it.

His Brickhouse number is not as impressive live as I found when watching Ice Wars on TV. But it got a big hand from the audience.

Tara: I'm not a huge fan but I did like both of the numbers (Genie slightly more than American woman). I think she's developing just fine for her age and where she is professionally. What seems out of place though is SOI's seemingly subconscious concetration of making her the female lead or focus of the show. That's a lot of pressure and she can't carry it off. At least not yet. Tara is still very much in her grooming years. That was very much evidenced when Kristi came out.

Kristi: The number of camara flashes that went off when she came out to do "Bridge over Troubled Water" was astonishing. No other member of the cast had that many pictures taken. I'm amazed that an announcement was not made before the 2nd Act started. Kristi is the female lead of the show. No doubt. She is so polished. I kept thinking how perfect everything seems. She did have a fall in her Santana number, but came back and hit all her tough jumps that followed. I did not like the number as much as others in my group did. But she was great nonetheless.

Roca & Sur - beautiful number in the 1st act to some classical music. I hope they re-broadcast the show on TV so I can tape it. They are really developing into a premier dance team. I didn't think they could ever be as good to watch as Torvill and Dean, but they are.

Becke & Petrov - they got the 1st and only standing ovation of the night (other than Scott, which surprised them from the looks on their faces). What a great number! They have really mastered the art of innovative lifts. This is another one that I hope is broadcast on TV for me to tape. Very fun and exciting number to Russian folk music.

Lulu - the weak link. I hope she snaps out of it. I loved her amatuer career and the beauty of her skating but she's a shadow of that skater I remember. The song she had was an energetic Whitney Houston song. Any other skater would have had the audience clapping with the music I bet. I don't think sexy, rock numbers work for her. She did not land one triple jump that I remember. I was embarassed for her. Please Lulu, stop the sexy rock numbers and try something else. And at your stage you should be able to land at least one triple jump. Roz Summers did harder jumps than you.

Katia - her ribbon number is beautiful. She did fall once and got tangled in the ribbon. But my mom commented on how much stronger and confident she looked as a single skater. I agree. This could be a signature singles piece for her. She landed a gorgeous triple toe.

I loved the duet she had with Ilia. My aunt commented how different a skater Katia is when she is skating with a partner. It is amazing to see the change in her in person. I really feel she is meant to be a pairs skater. She just comes alive. Poor Ilia looked so serious and was obviously concentrating on not screwing up. The best move is the final pose when he is doing a squated spread eagle and she is on his knee. Very effective.

Ilia - I did not like the jazzy number he did. He flails his arms a little too much for me. But I did like his baseball cap number. He nailed this program perfectly! Every movement was right on.

Scott - his "You can call me Al" program was a little too generic. It reminded me of his "One week" program from last year. Figaro was much better and got a huge ovation from the crowd. No matter what, he's amazing. The guy is forty I think and he still skates like it's the most fun thing in the world. He's a perfect example of skating for the joy of it.

I don't remember Steven Cousins and Meno/Sands that much. But they all skated smoothly.

I liked the final number more for the symbolism than anything else. I have never heard this version of "A Wonderful World" but I really got into it.

Final random thoughts: The costumes throughout the show were awesome. If Jeff Billing did the designs, than he should pat himself on the back.

I kept thinking throughout how good Todd Elderedge would be on this tour. Steven and Kurt both had very rock and roll numbers. They canceled each other out. (I really want to see "Glory" live!)

I keep thinking of the thread earlier about things that unknowledgable people say about skaters. I heard a number of cringe-worthy ones from these two women behind me:

(Of Roca & Sur) "These are the Russian pairs - he split her head open doing a spin.

(Of Meno & Sand) "They are the brother and sister team" then later "She's looking up at her brother's crotch!" (I cringed).

(Of Lulu) "Wow - they gave Tara 3 numbers and Michelle only this one".

(Of Paul Wylie - who was in the same section but about 10 rows from us). "That's Paul Wylie over there. He got married this past summer". The other woman said "To a woman or a man?" (I actually turned and stared at her for that!)
