The Schnauzer goes back in history to sometime during the
1400's and the area of middle Europe known as the Tyrol. The breed served man as a trusted guard and family dog of the working class. They worked farm animals, chased rodents and guarded the children on the farms while adults went about general day farm activity.
In the 1500's and in the 1600's travelling traders and merchants used Schnauzers to protect their wagons as they travelled the countryside. Schnauzers were often seen guarding wagons in market places or outside tverns.
It is claimed that dogs that look like Schnauzers feature in several art works from this time. In Mecklenborg, Germany, there is a statue of a hunter with
a Schnauzer crouching at his feet. The Schnauzer appears in statues including The Night Watchman (1620) in Stuttgardt, Germany.
