Aaron Poelker's Journal: Week 1
1.One paragraph summary of the key idea summarizing the topic of the week. During the first three weeks in class we discussed what real learning is and if we actually really learn from our mistakes or if we do not learn from the mistakes we have made like Icarus from the story of Icarus and Daedalus. We also discussed how one persons values and opinions are not as valid as someone else’s due to experience or bias. In the story of the Blind Men and the Elephant clearly illustrated how our bias’ sometimes get in the way of what is actually there in front of us. Another main idea we discussed was Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and how to perceive what reality actually is and what we perceive as reality. We also discussed the difference between Faith and faith and what we have faith in, in our lives. In class we also discussed what metanoia is and how to do apply it to our lives.
2. List and explain three of the most important ideas you want to remember from this week.
“The unexamined life is not worth living.” We need to always strive to examine everything we do in life and learn from the mistakes we make by examining our actions in everyday situations. By not examining our lives we do not learn from our mistakes and continue in some of the bad habits we have incorporated into our lives.
Metanoia- a change of mind and heart away from selfishness, ignorance, and sin and towards love, truth and, grace.
Opinion vs. Belief- An opinion is a view not necessarily based on fact or knowledge while a belief is something you believe as true without definite truth..

Am i practicing real learning?
5. What should you try to do to make you a better person, a more faithful person, from this study.
I think I need to practice real learning better in my life. Sometimes I do not learn from my mistakes and it comes back to haunt me or rear its head again. I also need to perceive what reality is and not be like the men in The Allegory of the Cave and not see the world for what it is and what is around it.
