The Human Jesus by Aaron Poelker

It is said that Jesus is completely divine and completely human at the same time. For many Catholics and Christians alike this is a contradicting idea at first glance and is also very tough to understand. We must try to understand that Jesus was just like you and me, except free from sin. Jesus was tempted by the evils of the world just like anyone else. He suffered from temptation when he was in the desert and the devil offered him the riches of the world amongst other thing’s. Truly believing that Jesus is human is a wonderful thing. Jesus the human being is someone we can relate to much easier than Jesus Christ son of God. Jesus feared death and persecution, even though he knew it must happen in order to fulfill the prophecies. It can be noted that in the gospel of Luke that whenever Jesus performs a miracle he says do not tell anyone. By the four words “do not tell anyone,” we can grasp that Jesus had fears just like everyone else.
It can also been seen that Jesus on many occasions attended large parties. I think this for me truly attracts me to the everyday man, Jesus. I personally always had this contorted view that Jesus was all business, i.e. healing people and teaching about the kingdom of Heaven, but by partying with ordinary people it shows that Jesus loves to have fun in the presence of other people. Jesus also had trouble with his Faith sometime. When Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemani, before he was taken captive, he asked God the Father to rid him of the burden of dying for mankind’s sins. By reading about Jesus’s doubts and questions really helps me to come to terms with Jesus and his humanity. He did what anyone facing death did, he asked for a way out.
We must always understand that Jesus is our God but I think it is equally important to understand Jesus the man. Jesus the man taught us life lessons and the way we should act. He was a revolutionary thinker. He came to teach us about the kingdom of Heaven. Jesus was not all business, and he conquered preconceived notions of the Savior. He partied, he worked, and taught. He did not place himself on a pedestal, he came and lived among the commoners, and that to me is the very definition of Jesus the man.
