Gourry is the stupid sufer bum of the group. His IQ matches that of a shoe, however, when he really needs to use his empty noodle he can actually figure some things out. He's actually a very sweet guy, and sometimes he get's ripped on too much and doesn't get all the credit that he rightfully deserves. He proclaimed himself Lina's protector in the first episode of Slayers, in which he couldn't keep up with her, and once Lina found out that he had the Sword of Light, he couldn't keep her away. Gourry is an extremely skilled swordsman, and he proves this many times in all 3 series.
