"You Belong Right Here With Me"
Special thanks to MBC for contributing the transcripts and pics!
(Sonny is sitting at the bar talking on the
phone and going over some paperwork when Karen comes in)
S: (on the phone) "All right. All right. Bye." (hangs up)
K: "Hey."
S: (turns his head and looks at her) "Hey."
K: "Hope you don't mind." (walks further in)
S: (places his head on his palm) "What's to mind?"
K: (leans against the bar) "Well me stopping by like this. I… I
just didn't have any place else to go."
S: "I already told ya that you could stop by whenever you want." (smiles)
"So uh… what's going on."
K: "Nothing. I was just in the neighborhood." (Sonny moves his hand
and chuckles and she smiles slightly) "What? You don't believe
me?"
S: "You don't need an excuse." (places his cheek on his fist)
K: "I know. I just always kinda wanted to say I was in the neighborhood,
you know. " (low) "Kinda lame I guess… huh?"
S: "You could do better. So tell me all about it."
K: (kinda shocked) "How do you do that?"
S: "What?"
K: "You… you always do that. It's like you can see right through
me."
S: "Not... well… not… not exactly. I don't see right through you... I
see you. There's a difference. It's subtle but it means I know when something's
bothering you. Are… are… are you really gonna make me pull this out of
you?"
K: (walks around him to the other side) "It's just my mom."
S: (turns in his chair) "She on your back again?"
K: "Well this is new, right? She just… she wants to control me and I hate
that… I..."
S: "So, don't let her."
K: "Well I don't you know? But it just bothers me."
S: "So don't let it." (He chuckles)
K: (laughs) "God you just make things so simple don't you?"
S: "It is."
K: "I just don't see it that way, you know. I just start looking at my life
and thinking about who I am and where I belong you know… it's confus-"
S: (interrupts) "That… that… that's easy… you belong right
here with me."
(Karen looks at him and smiles)
{Scene 2}
(Sonny and Karen are now at a table. Karen is
already seated. Sonny places a drink in front of her)
K: "Thanks"
S: (sits down) "Feeling better?"
K: (she starts playing with her ponytail) "Yeah." (she takes
her hair out of the ponytail and lets it fall over her shoulders. Sonny's
staring at her) "What?" (He still looks at her) "What?
Why are you looking at me like that?"
S: (smiles) "Like what?"
K: "I don't know." (looks at him) "Like… like
that."
S: "Maybe I just like what I see."
K: (genuinely) "Do you?"
S: "Now why would you doubt that?"
K: "You ever feel like um…" (places her head in her hands)
"…nobody understands you? You know like the real you."
S: "Are you kidding? I stopped expecting that a long time ago."
K: (sighs) "Yeah well I haven't."
S: "Whose opinion matter so much?"
K: "No, no… that's not what I meant. It's not what I meant."
S: "Look, l know you're going through a kind of reevaluation period and
talking about it helps. I'm here for ya."
K: "Well you know how I'm gonna go to college soon right. And um… I
always used to look forward to that. And I… I worked my butt off getting good
grades and honors and all of that. And… and it's like now it's like what for,
you know. And all these kids that I used to know it's like we got nothing in
common anymore, you know. I don't know. I don't know what I'm talking
about."
S: "No, no… I do."
K: "Oh great, could you tell me?"
S: "You're changing Carrie. And change is… is good. If you don't change
you die."
K: "Well if change is good why do I feel so lousy?"
S: "Because that's how it feels at first."
K: "So I should feel good cause I feel lousy?"
S: (laughs) "Now you got it. You know what's happening Carrie?
You're getting ready to fly and those kids don't belong with you anymore. You're
more than they are."
K: (shakes her head slightly) "No I'm not."
S: "Don't argue with me. You've had experiences that they can't
comprehend."
K: "Okay so what do I do?"
S: "You've got to learn to trust yourself."
K: "I always have, you know… but I guess… I guess it's just harder, you
know."
S: "Do you trust me?"
K: "I'm starting to."
S: "Do you think I would lie to you?"
K: "No."
S: "Then you have to trust me when I say don't second-guess yourself.
Forget all these people that are making decisions. You got your own life. You
say what makes you comfortable."
K: "I feel comfortable with you."
S: (smiles and raises his glass to her) "Good." (He takes a
sip)
(Karen takes a sip from her glass and smiles)
