A Life Without Fear

This begins a week after her car went off the bridge. The scene is Sonny’s Casino, he looks up from his cards and comes face to face with Brenda…

A Life Without Fear

“Brenda” he said shocked as she leaned up against the poker table next to him

“Sonny” she said smiling, taking his chips and playing with them

“They told me…” he begins confused, he doesn’t know how to say the words that he had dreaded hearing. How could she be real?

“That I was dead” she finished for him “I know to the whole world Brenda Barrett is dead.” He continues to be speechless. She smiles again “Don’t worry honey, you’re not hallucinating. We should probably continue this talk in private.” She says walking away; she leads him outside to the beach.

“How?” he says shaking his head

“Easy, I unbuckled my seat belt and I swam as if my life depended on it.” She smiles “Oh wait that’s right it did.” She gives a small grimace though actually remembering “She’s dead.”

“Who?” thoughts are not running clearly through his head all he can think is She’s alive

“My mother, she” she glances around nervously “uh pulled the wheel. She hit her head on the dashboard…I unbuckled her seat belt to try and save her, then I realized she was dead.” She shakes her head remembering her mother’s lifeless body float up in her car “her neck broke when we hit.” She chokes out the words and sits on the beach, she stares out into the water, she can’t move past the image in her mind.

He sits down next to her, but his eyes never leave her, he’s afraid she’ll disappear. “It wasn’t your fault you know,” he wants more than anything to take away the pain that had engulfed her “it was her disease. I know she loved you.”

“How could you know?” she asks shaking her head slightly

“Because everyone that meets you, loves you.” He says with a small smile, he knew that for a fact because he had fallen for her from day one.

She laughs “Oh yea”

“Look at me or look at Jax, have you ever seen such love struck fools?”

She laughs again and he smiles “Okay the men, I’ll admit they seem to like me, except for my father that is. Now maybe that’s why the women,” she pauses and pretends to ponder “well, we just didn’t seem to get along.” She continues to smile

“So you gonna tell me the rest of the story?”

“The rest of the story,” she shakes her head “There’s not much to tell, I swam to the shore, I had my ATM card on me, I used it. I don’t think they’ll catch on that it was from a half an hour after my death. Jax will think I stopped at a gas station just before” she pauses for a moment, looking for the right words “my accident.”

“What happened to the whole marriage thing?”

“Oh I’m still doing the whole marriage thing, only I’m marrying the guy I’ve wanted since I was what nineteen, I know we met when I was 18, but I didn’t realize I wouldn’t be able to live without you then.”

“Bren” he begins and she cuts him off, sick of him telling her they can’t be together.

“Do you remember what I told you, how I would rather be alive than be Mrs. Corinthos? Well you wanna know what Sonny, I’m dead, I’m dead to everyone out there. No one is going to be looking for me because I’m dead. There can’t be a contract out on a dead person, can there? You told me you wanted me to have a life without fear, guess what this is it. More importantly you told me you wanted me to have love. You are the one I love so much it drives me insane when you’re not next to me.” Tears start falling down her cheeks

He too has tears streaming down his cheeks “Bren” he says again shaking his head.

“You told me you wanted to see me pregnant, you wanted to see me with a baby in my arms, you wanted to see the wrinkles I know that I’ll complain about, and the gray hair that I’ll dye. Well this is your last chance Sonny Corinthos. Let me stay dead and we can have forever. We’re smart, we won’t get caught. Even if we do, whose to say the plane you put me on to send me back to Port Charles won’t crash? Who’s to say I don’t have another “accident?” This is our chance Sonny, we can be together forever, if you just say yes.”

“Yes?” he says standing, looking down at her with shock in his voice, “All you want me to do is say yes? I was ready to fall to your feet in there and begin praying to you, praying to god for answering my every single prayer that I’ve begged, pleaded, threatened him for this past week. I just kept telling him if he gave me a second chance I would never let anyone hurt you, that I would never leave you again, and all you want me to do is say yes. I was ready to put a bullet in my brain to be with you again and all you want me to do is say yes?”

She smiles up at him, laughing through her tears at his overdone speech “Isn’t that a mortal sin? I was planning on going to Heaven, not Hell.”

“Yea well, god would understand. I love you more than life itself.” He says sinking to his knees before her.

“Well I’m glad you held back on that though, really not into the whole Romeo and Juliet thing.”

“Yea well, I was more afraid of my mom than God if I did something like that.” He says with a little shake of his head

She smiles at him again, she couldn’t help but smile when his dimples came out and his eyes twinkled under the moonlit sky. “I love you Sonny Corinthos”

He leans forward saying “I love you too, Mrs. Soon to be Sonny Corinthos.”

“Promise you won’t leave me standing in the rain again” she says locking their eyes

He froze for a moment then answered “If you ever find yourself standing in the rain, just look next to you, I’ll be there with an umbrella waiting.” He put one arm around her back and kissed her while lowering to the floor.

He gave her the life without fear he once thought was impossible, but he gave her more than just that. He gave her a life with passion and excitement. Three children, that he spoiled rotten as she tried to discipline them. Most importantly he gave her a life full of love and she was never afraid of anything ever again and neither was he. They finally realized that as long as they had each other they could survive anything, even death.
