"I remember when I was a little girl, when Billy and I went out for Halloween" I told Coretta, Glenn and Elaine. "Every year, we would dress up in a matching couple type of costume. I would be a lion, he would be the tamer. He would be a groom I would be the bride. I would be a mouse he would be a cat. We had so much fun!" We were decorating the office for Halloween. Usually, law firms dont decorate for halloween, and our wasnt the exception, but I needed to set my mind on other things. I went shopping and came back with 100 dollars of Halloween decorations. One thing is sure: we will be the best decorated law firm in the whole state of Massachusets when were done because we have way too much! We have pumkins, lights, ghosts and tons of bowls full of candy. It’s insane! I didn't really set out to buy so many, but when I saw all the costumes and decorations, it triggered a certain nostalgia. I was remembering my childhood with Billy. Since Larry had left, I had seen Billy several times and I needed it. I needed to remember a time where everything felt safe and I didnt worry about anything. That night, I took my three best friends home with me to decorate my apatment. Halloween was in a day and I needed to get to decorate hy appartement with the reamining decorations. Since Renee had left for New-York, i had bought a new house. But it was big and I felt kind of lonely. Glenn, Coretta and Elaine had been spending a lot of time over, so I had friends to hold on to. " Ally, do you really need this many decorations?" asked Glenn. "Of course she does!" Exclaimed Coretta. "When I was a kid, we’d only stop at the houses with the most decorations because we knew they had the most candy. Right Elaine?" " I didn't go trick or treating on Halloween! I went to dances. I made out. I was the treat!" She giggled. We all rolled our eyes as Elaine silently reminised. " So Glenn, how did your date with Nelle go?" I asked scornfully. Glenn was my friend and I was happy for him, but I didnt understand why all the good guys went out with Nelle! John, Larry, Glenn. . .three sweet men who ended up with the coldest woman on earth. " It went great! She is so nice and sweet! I never thought id get along with her this much! She is so smart and hot. . ." "Ok Glenn! Enough," barked Coretta. " Yeah, since when does Nelle have a heart?" I asked. " Enough! Nelle is wonderfull and you guys never gave her a chance! Just. . .get to know her. She isnt as bad as you think." said Glenn. We all looked our respective decorations and no one spoke for a while. When Glenn came to the firm, he thought that he loved me. He wanted to take care of me because he knew what had happened with Larry and I. It didnt work out between us because he turned out to love Jenny. That relationship failed too however and Nelle got her cold, icy paws on him before you could utter a shiver. He was one of my best friends and somehow I couldnt imagine being with Nelle. I respected it, though because I had never seen Glenn this happy. " Hey, do you guys want to come over tomorow night? We’ll have a slumber party and we’ll give out candy!" I asked to break the silence. " That would be cool!" said Coretta. "Ok then! After work tomorow." "All right."
"I promised Ally and I didnt know you wanted to hang out. If you want, I'll tell Ally that I cant." said Glenn. " Please. Do that." Nelle said bitterly. " What the hell is your problem! Why dont you like Ally! Why cant you two get along?" Glenn screamed. " Twice! Twice she steals my boyfriend! First Larry, now you! Why can't she just leave my boyfriends alone!" " Is that it? Oh my god! Nelle! Ally and I went out. It didn't work out but she is one of my best friends! Don't feel insecure about her! If you want, you can come over tomorow night, allright? I’m sure that she won't mind." Glenn said. Glenn took Nelle in his arms and held her as she cried. Glenn saw a facet of Nelle’s personality that she never let anyone see. Nelle never cried in front of others, because she didnt want anyone to see her weak side. The truth was, she was scared and lonely. Glenn was her rock and she didnt want to lose him. Glenn took Nelle’s chin in his hand and their eyes locked. "Look at me," he said with tears in his eyes. "I love you, Nelle." " I love you too," she whispered before Glenn tenderly kissed her forehead.
When Larry left, Coretta joined Cage and Fish. Maybe because Coretta was her Larry connection, Ally became good friends with her. They often hung out in Ally’s new house. Ally had changed houses to get rid of the stigma the apartment had: it reminded her of Larry and Renee and it was too much for her to handle. Coretta had put on her pyjamas and was turning off the lights in her appartment. She laid down in her bed but was quickly startled by the telephone. She ran and tripped on her feet a few times before collapsing on the sofa and picking up the phone. " Hello?" she asked, out of breath. There was no answer on the other end of the line and Corretta was getting upset. "Listen bud, I’ve had a long day and you made me get up so what the hell is it?!" "Coretta?" the stranger asked. " Who is this?" " Hi Coretta, it’s Larry."
A neighboor opened her window: "Hey! Lady! Shut up! It’s 2 am. Come back tomorow!" As Coretta was about to shout back, a tall handsome but sleepy man answered the door. "Hi, is Elaine here?" asked a confused Coretta. " Uh, yeah she is. Just a second." He went in and Elaine came out, looking rather undone and sleepy a few minutes later. " Who was that?" asked Coretta. " Harry. He’s a teacher." " Okay! He’s cute. Not too smily but cute." said Coretta. " Well, it’s two in the morning. . .So?" asked Elaine. "So what?" "Coretta, why are you here? It’s two in the morning!" Elaine shouted. " Larry called. " Coretta said. " What? Why? How is he? Where is he?" asked Elaine, her face brightening. " He’s fine. He’s in Boston, actually. He lives a few streets away and he wants to see Ally, but he wanted to know if she missed him. I told him that she was good but that he shouldn't try to contact her unless he plans on leaving her with more than a note! He said he wasn't sure if he could and I told him that I wouldn't let him hurt my friend." " Wow. Does he know where she lives?" " No. And her number isn't listed and she moved, so he doesn't know where she lives." Coretta said. "That’s good! That’s really nice, but why didn't you tell him where she is? Why can't he know?" "I dont know." " That’s allright, I guess. Anyway, I’m bringing Harry over tomorow night. Is that okay?" " Yeah, I guess. Nelle is coming." "What?’ asked Elaine surprised. " Yeah, Glenn called me and asked me if I thought Ally would accept and I said yes, so she probably will accept." Elaine began to yawn and Coretta got the idea. " Good night, Elaine." she said. "Night night."
"Come on guys, I said. We are thirty year olds! We dont play truth or dare. . ." " Ally, truth or dare!?" Harry asked insistantly. "Um. . .okay, Truth." " Allright. . .Did you ever kiss a woman?" he asked as seriously as a grown man asking that question can. Nelle, Elaine and I burst out laughing. " I kissed three," I answered, completely creeping him out." I kissed my ex-boyfriend’s wife, my ex-coworker Ling and Elaine." " My Elaine?" he asked disgusted. "No, don't worry," I giggled. "I was trying to get out of dating this crazy guy and. . ." The doorbell rang and I ran up to answer it wearing the blue blinking nose Larry had gotten me. You had to admit it was pretty cute and I wanted to show it off.. Three kids in adorable matching bunny costumes stood in front of me grinning from ear to ear. I asked them to sing a song as I did for all the others. They sang Old McDonald Had a Farm. I handed them their candy and smiled, remembering how much I want kids. I shook the idea out of my head. I was hosting a slumber party. It was no time to feel sad. I sat back down at my place in the circle, ripped off my blue nose and looked at my friends, new and old, and then at Nelle. I hate being bitter because I have nothing to be bitter about, but I just don't like her. I invited her only because Glenn asked me to. I didn't want to hurt his feelings. I went in the kitchen and got a few beers. We were having what would seem like the most corrupted high-school slumber party in the world. We drank the beers and kept playing truth or dare. " Truth" Coretta answere when I asked her the question. " Okay. . .hmmm. Out of all the secrets anyone has ever told you, which one would you rather tell and why." For a moment, Coretta’s face went blank, as if she had a secret but didnt want to say it. " Say it Corry!" Harry screamed. He was getting a little tipsy from the beer, probably because he wasnt used to it. Coretta shot him a killer look. Either she hated being called Corry or she really didnt want to tell that secret, which made me really curious , because that meant it was something about someone we know and god knows i’m not very good at staying out of other people’s lives. " You have to tell the truth, Coretta!" Nelle said, and for the first time ever, I agreed. " Okay, first, Ally has to promiss she wont get upset." Coretta said. " Scout’s honor." I said. " Last June, I was at my office working on a case and a friend asked me for advice about him and his girlfriend. . ." Coretta didn't have time to finish her story. The doorbell rang and Harry and I both raced to get it. I followed him, grabbing my blue blinking nose on the way. I put it on and Harry yanked the door open. In front of us stood the cutest little vampire in the world. He had blond hair that was slicked back and a large black cape. He had little fangs and smiled such a big grin. He seemed to be around 8 or 9 years old. " Hey, cutie, where are you parents?" I asked, concerned. He took his fangs out and said: "I ran in front of my dad." "Ah. You’re very sneaky! Sing me a song." " Ah. . .allright, let me think. . ." he said adorably. A few seconds later, he cleared his throat and sang: "Puff the magic dragon live by the sea . . ." The boy kept singing, but I fazed out. Clearly he hadn't recognized me with the blue nose, but the little boy was too familiar. He was in fact Sam Paul. We had sung that song together that night and only he could sing it like that. It coldnt be anyone but Sam. Outside, it was raining and Sam was standing on my porch under the roof. I looked around for Larry but he wasn't in sight. Everything was silent and Harry poked me. " Ally, he sang his song. . ." " Oh right, sorry." I said scooping up a handfull of lollypops. " Here you go, Sam." I said distractedly. " Ally?" he asked, with that innocently confused look on his face. " Sam, how are you?" I said, leaning down to give the little Dracula a hug. " I’ve missed you!" he said. " I missed you too. . .Where’s your dad?" I asked while looking around. " I dont know. I ran ahead of him, he’s probably on his way." " Well, I guess I’ll see you around Sam," I said while shutting the door. I thought that maybe I could stay out and wait for Larry, but then I got really scared. From behind Sam, that painfully familiar voice yelled: "Sam, buddy, dont do that again, I was worried." I guess Larry saw the blue glow from the nose, because he stopped dead in his tracks, the rainwater slowly pouring over his umbrella. He looked as good as before. I know it hadn't been so long, but somehow, I thought he would have changed. He did'nt though. He was still as wonderfully beautiful as he used to be. Unfortunatly, Larry didnt seem that happy to see me. He walked up the steps. " Ally. Its good to see you," he said in a deadpan voice. He shook my hand and looked coldly at Harry. " Hey, Larry. This is Harry, he’s a friend. . ." I said. " No need to explain. It was nice seeing you again, I hope you’re happy," he said. "Come on, Sammy. Let’s go. There is candy to be found," he added while forcing a smile. Larry Paul walked away from me, once again. Tears filled my eyes and I ran into my room, throwing the nose across the house. " Could someone tell me what’s going on," Harry asked.
Elaine held him tightly and all that Glenn wanted to do was run after Larry. But then again, that would seem even more suspicious, because Larry didnt know who he was. Finally, Harry lept to his feet and ran out the door. He scrambled to put his trenchcoat on and he scoured the streets looking for a little vampire and his tall father. He didn't have to look far. One block away from Ally’s house, Larry and Sam were walking hand in hand. Harry shouted. " Hey. Hey! Larry!" Larry turned around and froze. " Harry, what do you want?" Larry asked scornfully. " Okay, buddy, get off my back. I’m not going out with Ally. I’m Elaine’s boyfriend." Harry said. " Really," asked Larry surprised. " Yes. I just met Ally tonight. She’s a great girl and you are not being fair." " Now YOU get off my back! You dont know me, Harry. All you know is what you’ve been told. . ." " And if what I’ve been told is correct, then you really do love her. You wanted to marry her." Harry said. "And if you love her that much, he added, then you will get your ass back there and talk to her in nice, civilised tones. Because a great girl like her is not going to be available forever. But I think she still loves you." " What makes you say that. You barely know us." Larry said. " Yes, but when a girl is weeping alone in her room during a Halloween party and that she carries that little blue nose everywhere she goes, I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet to say she’s still in love with you." Larry looked down at his shoes and Sam tugged at his shirt. " Dad are we going?" he asked. " Where?" " To Ally’s." "No, bud I promised that you would get the most candy out of all your friends, and you will." Larry and Sam walked away, but Harry was still frantic to get him to come back. " WAIT!" he yelled. "What?" Larry asked, turning around. " Why don't I take Sam Trick or Treating for you. I know you just met me, but if you want, Elaine can come along and we’ll meet you at Ally’s home in two hours." "That would be great. I’m sorry, I didnt catch your name. Harry?" " Harry Senate," he said while extending his arm to shake Larry’s hand. " Larry Paul." he said shaking Harry’s hand. "Come on! Let’s go!" Sam hurried his dad.
" Coretta, you havent told me that secret yet." I said. " Ally, that’s not such a great idea," Glenn said. " Yeah, maybe we’re not the good ones to tell you." Nelle added. " They know now? Come on, Coretta, I want to know!" I said. " Ally. . ." Elaine softly said. " No! Tell me! Now! I know it’s about me and I know you’re just looking out for me, but really, I’m a big girl. I can handle it." They all looked at eachother and Coretta fiddled with her hair for a few seconds more before coming to sit beside me. " Ally," she began, "You know that time that you went to dinner with Larry, in June?" " Yeah, I think." " He was nervous, wasn't he?" " Well, he wasn't himself. He was nervous, I guess." "Okay, well, that same day, I had had a conversation with Larry. He asked me what would be a good way to ask you to marry him." My eyes were flooded with tears as she continued: "I told him to take you to dinner and to put the ring in a desert. But when he ordered the desert, the lousy waiter brought the wrong one and the ring went to the wrong table. He had lunch with his ex wife the next day because he needed a confidante and that’s why you got suspicious and that’s why you two aren't married to this day." By the time she was finished her story, I was sobbing uncontrollably. Elaine dropped the cube and gave me a big hug. Coretta and Glenn joined her. Nelle surprisingly soon followed. Although I felt warm inside because I had such loyal friends, I felt so confused about Larry. Why would he do that, just give up on me. I got a hold of my senses and went back to my room, leaving my friends behind. They didnt leave, however. It was only 7:45 . The evening had just started and Harry was gone to get more wine. I fell asleep and was woken up minutes later by a soft knock on my door. " It’s opened," I moaned. The door squeaked and I was a little taken aback when I opened my eyes. " Larry?"
His hair and clothes were soaked and I could tell he had been cying, but then again so had I. Whenever I think back at what happened with Larry and I, I wonder what came between us. Could it be that we lacked trust? He thought that I was with Harry and I thought he was cheating on me. Yup, we lacked trust. That could be worked on. Did we lack passion? No! Of course not. Even when the realtionship started to get old, we loved eachother so much it was impossible that we would ever lack that. Trust was what was missing. We didnt trust eachother or ourselves. Like, when he sat down on my bed beside me, I wasnt sure if I was going to kiss him or kill him, which is a pretty scary thought. Larry broke the silence. " You must be really mad at me, right?" he asked. " No. Why would I be mad?" I asked. " Really? You’re not angry?" he asked, seeming relieved. " Of course I’m angry," I screamed, feelling the blood rushing to my face." Larry, you left me with a note, you. . .you. . .numb nuts!" I blurted. " Numb. . .nuts?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. Gosh, he was so cute! " It was the best I could do on short notice. . .but yeah, sure numb nuts. The name fits!" I screamed. I heard a muffled giggle behind the door. Glenn was laughing at my pathetic insult. I was so "middle school". I couldnt blame him for laughing because I would have done the same. " Ally, come on! Calm down." " Why should I calm down. I am cool as a cucumber. I am totally in control. . ." I rambled as Larry stood up. " Would you just listen to me?" he shouted. I calmed down. He had startled me and I realize I was acting like a child. He sat down on the floor in front of me and took off his glasses. " Ally, I’m sorry for what I did. I admit, leaving a note was lame and cowardly. I should have never done that and I regretted it every day I was in Detroit. I cant blame you for not trusting me. I was such a jerk." " You were." I said. " Ok, work with me here, Ally." he pleaded. " Sorry." " Tell me what’s on your mind." I stood up. I was taken off guard and I wasnt sure what was on my mind. I was mad, but I realize that I had missed Larry with all my heart and that I still loved him. " Well, I’m angry. No. . .I am fucking pissed off! You see me for the first time in months and the only thing you find to do is act like a complete jerk. You didnt even bother to ask who Harry was. You didnt even know him . . . and who are YOU to come back and be all possesive! You left me! You had no right to act that way. And in front of your son, too! Wow, Larry, he has a good male example! With that kind of skils with women that you are giving him, the only places in society he is suited for is pimp, priest or hermit. . ." " Ok, Ally, that’s enough. . ." " No, it’s not enough, dammit! I’m pissed off! I’m pissed that you left. I’m pissed that you went to Detroit and you didnt call. I’m pissed that you gave up on me that quickly. I’m pissed off that you came back and acted like a big ass and I’m pissed above all that despite all that i’m pissed off about, I’m still in love with you." When I was done, I was crying and Larry’s eyes were filled with tears. I let myself collapse on my bed and clenched a tissu that had been in my pocket. Larry got up from his spot on the floor and sat beside me. He wraped his arm around me and exhausted, I let myself fall into his arms and cry. I held him tight and smelled him, trying to seal as much of this moment as I could. He held me and rocked me and for the first time in months, I was letting myself surrender and be weak. I could feel Larry’s tears rolling on my neck and for almost one whole hour, we didnt talk. We just clenched eachother, both afraid to let go first. I didnt tell him that I knew about the failed proposal and I didnt want to tell him. I would let that be his secret and leave him the joy of proposing, if her ever wanted to, if we ever got back together. Larry pulled away first, but clenched my hand and kissed it. I started to cry. " I love you Ally McBeal. I hate myself for making you so bitter. Can you ever forgive me?" he asked. I leaned towards him and kissed him tenderly. He kissed me back and all of my fears went away. He caressed my hair and a shiver went down my spine. When we finally broke away from our kiss, we were both smiling. Our tears had dried and we were happy again. " Do you want to go out there yet?" I asked. We both got up and he gave me a tight hug. He kissed me again. "Okay, he said, Now we can go." We walked into the living room and found that the others had left us. On the couch where Glenn and Nelle had been sitting, there was a note on a small piece of white paper.
Hope you dont mind that we left. We thought it would be innapropriate for us to stay. We hope that you two work things out. You love and deserve eachother. Either way, Ally, we’ll see you tomorrow at work. Love you, talk to you later. Glenn, Nelle and Coretta xoxo. . .
" Tough night." Coretta said. "Yeah. When you worked with Larry, was he always that explosively passionate?" Glenn asked. " He was always rash. He never was at a loss for words and he never weighed what he said. He really loved his girlfriend, though. I remember when he missed her birthday for an important case. He was devastated!’ "I still think it’s crazy that he left her so coldly, though. Can you imagine getting dumped with a note! How cold is that!" Nelle said. " Colder than you!" Coretta sliped out. Glenn shot Coretta a killer look and she immediatly changed the subject.
I had no idea where Larry was at that moment. He hadnt told me where he lived or where he worked, but I was sure that I could get those details from Coretta, who had kept in touch with him the past few months. I pulled myself off the couch and scrambled to make coffee. I then went to the bathroom and had a long, hot shower. When I came out of the shower, on my bathroom mirror were written the words "I Love You", in big block letters. Larry had taken the time to write it in soap so it would come out when I took my shower. Smiling, I made my way to the kitchen to get my coffee. By the sink, in my favorite mug, there was a little note folded into four. I opened it and read it.
I had to leave early last night, without saying goodbye. I didnt want you to think I had just run off, since the reason I left was because Sam had to get on an early flight to Detroit this morning. He had a great time with Harry and Elaine last night and he cant wait to see them again. I love you Ally McBeal. Larry xoxoxo. . .
By 11 am, no phone call from Larry and I was gettin rather upset. Where was he! I had no plans and all I was waiting for was him to wisk me away!
Harry came behind Elaine and hugged her from behind. He kissed her neck and she shivered. He wrapped his arms around her and took her hand. He slipped a ring on her finger and Elaine’s eyes grew wide. Harry suddenly became very nervous. He made her turn around and got down on one knee. " I’ve only known you for a few months, but I dont think I can love anyone as much as I love you. Will you marry me?"
" Hello?" I said, breathlessly. " Hey, Ally, it’s me. I guess you got my note?" Larry said. " Yes I did." I said, pausing for several seconds. "When can I see you again?" I asked. " Oh I am an awfull guy! I can't see you at lunch today. I am over my head in work. I can't even make time for dinner." "Oh, " I said. Was he still the same? Could I trust him? " I promise to hop by your place tonight, allright?" he added. " Sure. That’ll be great" I said. We said goodbye and I dropped my head onto my desk.
I sat on my couch and opened my book. I was reading The Little Prince for the 1500th time, but it was such a beautiful, true book and I couldnt help but pick it up everytime I felt happy or sad. The story, although fantastic was incredibly true. I opened it at the bookmarked page and began to read. I read and turned to the second page when I was done. But something odd was written on the upper right corner of the page. My name was written in block letters, yet I didnt remembre writing in that book. I shrugged it off and kept reading, but when I turned to the next page, the word "WILL" was written in big block letters. I flipped to the next, that said "YOU. Then next had the word "MARRY" and the last of the five had the word "ME", followed by a big question mark and three little hearts. I began to cry. I knew it was from Larry, and I was happy, yet I was upset that he wasn't there so I could hold him in my arms. The phone rang and I ran to the kitchen to answer it. I noticed that on the phone cord, there was the ring. I diamond solitaire with a square diamond. " Hello?" I asked. " So, what’s your answer?" Larry asked. " Larry, where are you?" I asked. "I’m on my cell phone and I'll tell you when you tell me your answer." he said. " Yes! Of course I’ll marry you, Larry!" I cried. " Okay, great! No go to the living room and close your eyes. No peeking." I hung up and did as instructed, but had the hardest time keeping my eyes closed, because I knew that he was somewhere in my house. I suddenly felt a whiff of wind in front of me and Larry’s arms wrapping around me. I opened my eyes and Larry kissed me and held me. I felt so safe and warm as he ran his fingers in my hair and whispered sweet words in my ears. That night, we slept in front of the burning fireplace, holding on to each other tightly. He was so sweet and romantic: the snowman, the dessert proposal (however much it failed) and now this one with the book and the phone made him the most wonderful man in the world. Could I have lived a good life without Larry? Of course. But the truth is, when Larry came into my life, he took a place in my heart and if he would have never come back, that place could have never been filled by anyone else ever. He is a part of me, now and forever.
