The show opens with Ally and Larry in bed together, which is always a good thing :) But they're sleeping so I guess you can't win them all. LOL. Ally is having a nightmare about Larry leaving her, wakes up, looks over at Larry sleeping next to her, and starts hitting him and calling him a pig. LOL. That's the Ally we all know and love! Larry wakes up startled and Ally tells him about her nightmare. In her dream, he left her with nothing but a NOTE. The nerve! Well, Larry reminds her that it was only a dream but Ally doesn't care. She tells him that she's going to go back to sleep, find him in her dream, and deal with him there. I loved this scene. It was cute, playful, and much-needed because things were going to get tough later on.
Well, it had to happen sooner or later...... Sam, Larry's son, is in town. We discover that Sam is a very smart kid. Why? Because he ditched his mom and went to Boston by himself, leaving Jamie in Detroit. LOL. High five to Sam for that one! But he really does seem like a smart little boy. After all, how in the world did he know where his father's new girlfriend worked??? Anyone else think that was a little strange that Sam showed up at Ally's office by himself? Sam goes to Ally because he wants to sue his parents for emotional distress. Why, Ally asks. Well, because his parents split up. It doesn't take long for Ally to realize that this little kid is Larry's son. She brings him to Larry's office where Larry is surprised (obviously) to see Sam.
It turns out that Sam is just as good at laying guilt trips on his dad as his mom is. Sam tells Larry that his mom cries every night and so does he. Okay, it's sad but Larry left them FOUR YEARS ago. Anyway, Sam thinks it's time for Larry to cry, and Larry almost looks like he's ready to. It was actually a pretty sad scene and the little actor who played Sam was pretty good. The way he said things sounded just like Larry. If that wasn't intentional, it was a nice coincidence.
There's a little amusing scene between Ally and Sam when he's sizing her up. He tells Ally that he expected her to be younger. After all, aren't men supposed to end up with women younger than their ex? He asks Ally how old she is...... 50? Ouch! If he wasn't Larry's son, I'm sure Ally would've slapped him right there. LOL.
Next comes a very cute scene where Larry is on a unicycle and Sam is on his shoulders. The whole thing is really cute and they end up crashing inside Ally's office. I heard that it was actually a stuntman on the unicycle, if you wanted to know. And I also heard that Robert really does know how to ride one. A man of many talents, indeed! Inside Ally's office, Larry tells her that Sam is going to stay with him for a day or two because Sam wants to see his life. Ally says that's terrific. She asks Larry when she'll see him again and Larry tells her that he and Sam will be sleeping at Ally's place. She's surprised until Larry tells her why.... "He came to see my life." Awwwww. One of my favorite quotes!
Well, things start to turn sadder back at Ally's apartment. Ally and Sam are at the piano, while Larry is out buying them ice-cream. Sam tells Ally that he misses his dad and asks if he'll ever come back to Detroit. Of course, Larry picks the perfect time to come back home and listens in on their conversation. He's devastated when he hears Sam tell Ally what he thinks about him...... that Larry never talks to him about coming home, and that he likes to pretend that everything's okay. Sam asks Ally if she remembers when he told his dad that he cries every night? Ally says yes, and Sam says that his dad has probably already forgotten about that. That's what he does. The look on Larry's face is really sad. This may very well have been the moment when Larry started having thoughts about moving back to Detroit for Sam's sake.
The next day, Larry visits Ally in her office and something is obviously troubling him. Larry tells Ally that he talked to Sam's teacher and found out that he had been in a lot of fights at school. Larry doesn't know what to do anymore. Ally finally says the thing that had been going unsaid for a long time -- Larry needs to go back to Detroit.
I'm almost thankful that Ally said this because it was clearly a cloud that was hanging over both of their heads. Neither of them wanted to say it but it had to be said, and I'm glad Ally was the one to say it. She let Larry off the hook and it's probably better for her to know that it was she who was sending him off to Detroit, rather than him leaving her to go back to Detroit. Here comes another one of my favorite Ally & Larry scenes. It's the scene that shows Ally in all her selflessness and a scene that proves her love for Larry. She's willing to give up her own happiness for the sake of Larry's son. She tells him that Sam needs his dad and tells Larry that he needs to go to Detroit. Larry asks Ally if she'll go with him and Ally says, "In a second." If you catch the look on Larry's face, it is a subtle display of happiness and hope. But then Ally tells him that this is something that he needs to do on his own, and you could see the disappointment on his face. But he does tell her that he will come back and Ally answers, "I know you will, baby." They gently put their heads together and Larry asks her if this is her subtle way of dumping guys. I think he was half-joking, half-serious. He wanted to make sure that Ally was not breaking up with him. Ally shakes her head no and says, "Mr. Larry, I love you." This is the first time we had actually heard Ally say those three magical little words to Larry, and it was worth the wait. It was a very precious moment.
The next scene brings us to Larry's office as he is packing up his stuff in boxes. Nooooo!!! It just seemed so final. And Ally clearly felt the same way when she got there, by the look on her face. Larry showed Ally the blinking reindeer nose that they had played around with in a previous Christmas episode. He put it on Ally's nose and turned it on.... it was blinking blue...... which perfectly matched Ally's mood. She asks where the little homewrecker is -- LOL -- and he tells her that Sam is with Renee packing his stuff. Larry admits to Ally that he is terrible at goodbyes. He doesn't even want Ally to drive him to the airport so he rented a car instead. Ally is upset but Larry says again that he can't stand goodbyes. So he tells her to remember that he loves her and that he'll be back. He also says that he'll swing by her office later on before he leaves to see her one more time, but he won't say goodbye. He'll just..... leave a note, Ally guesses. Larry tells her that the dream Ally had was about something Larry really would do. How about that? Ally's dreams are now predicting the future. I'm telling you, there's a connection between them. Larry asks Ally to help him pack up his boxes and she does, while the song For Once In My Life begins playing. Now let me tell you, I was making it through this episode just fine without crying once. But when the song started playing and Ally started packing up Larry's boxes, that's it -- I was a goner. Tears everywhere. The song! It's the same song that played right after Ally & Larry's first kiss. The whole scene was just tearjerking for me. Seeing them packing up the boxes also reminded me of Larry's very first scene on the show, when he was UNPACKING the boxes. Sheesh. I just found it really sad.
Well, if I thought that was sad, then imagine what I was like during the very last scene. It's nighttime in Boston and Larry and Sam are outside the bar, waiting to say goodbye to Ally. Well, at least, Sam is ready to say goodbye to Ally. He tells her that he had a wonderful time and she hopes that he'll come and visit her. Sam says he will, and now he'll close the car window so she and his dad could smooch. LOL.
And now it's time for Ally and Larry to bid farewell. It was a little awkward for a moment there, neither one quite knowing what to say. Finally, Larry asks Ally if she still hears music in her head. She nods yes and he tells her to play that song he wrote for her. I love that. Other guys in Ally's past had thought she was a complete wacko for hearing music in her head. But with Larry, he doesn't mind and he actually requests songs! LOL. He tells Ally not to forget, and she tells him not to forget either. I love the look on Larry's face after Ally says that. It's so sad and caring and heartbreaking all at the same time. He hugs her and they hold each other for awhile, not really wanting to let go. But finally, they must part and Larry gets into his car and drives away, leaving Ally standing there all alone.
She has kind of a lost look on her face, and then she starts playing the song Larry wrote for her in her head. She begins walking home and we are treated to flashbacks of Larry. And that's it for me -- the tears are streaming down my face once again. I'm bawling like a baby. Flashbacks always get to me. We see some of Larry's greatest moments on the show. Back to Ally, she suddenly stops short and gazes at what is in front of her..... it's a snowman! It's right in front of the steps to her apartment. The snowman is designed to look just like Larry..... it has on his glasses, his hat, his scarf, and his jacket. It also has on the blue blinking nose! When Ally gets closer to it, she sees a NOTE attached to it. It reads ---
