Look at the title. Doesn't that just say it all? The Ex-Files. Yup, she's baaa-aaack. Jamie must really hate Detroit because she just can't seem to get her butt to stay there. She shows up in Larry's office again (of course, right when he and Ally are kissing) and announces that she has to talk to Larry alone. Okay, fair enough. Ally's gone and Jamie drops the bombshell that she's moving to Canada, taking his son out of the country, and wants him to sign off on it. Well, to say that Larry is not happy about this is putting it mildly. He's furious that Jamie is just going to pack up and take his son out of the country without even asking her. After all, she didn't ask him.... she just told him what the deal was. Jamie starts laying a guilt trip on Larry. If he wants to be with his son so much, why isn't he in Detroit? Ouch. I confess, Jamie does have a point, but since this is only a television show.... please allow me to go on disliking her :) But Jamie's no fool. She knows the reason why Larry is still in Boston -- Ally. She asks him if he's in love with Ally and he says he is. Take that, Jamie. Larry asks if this is about Jamie wanting to get him back, and she says no but we know better. She's lied before, why wouldn't she be lying now?
Well, Larry and The Evil B*tch Monster of Death's conversation gets even more heated. Larry suggests that Jamie and Sam move back to Boston but Jamie refuses and finally blurts out that she doesn't want to because he is there. She sits down next to him at his desk and starts going on and on about the passion they have for each other, blah blah blah...... I wasn't listening anymore. I was looking around my house for a weapon :) Then the most horrible thing happens! Larry kisses her!! I swear, at that moment, I had lost all faith and trust in Larry Paul. The b*stard! But he did redeem himself a little when he pulled away from Jamie and left the office. Okay, fine. We all have our moments of weakness. But still, that hurts.
And this all happened by the midway point of the episode. Remember when I said that if the episode had stopped right there, this would have been the worst Ally & Larry episode? Clearly, now you know why. And remember what I said in a previous episode review about spoilers? Oh boy, did I wish I had them during this episode. I was at the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I was ticked off at Larry for doing this to Ally. And Ally (who had even more right to be ticked off than I did - LOL) was understandably angry at him too when he confessed it all to her. Now I was happy that Larry went straight to Ally after kissing Jamie and confessed his wrongdoing, because you know what's worse than a cheater? A lying cheater. So he redeemed himself a little bit more when he did that. But again still, it doesn't excuse what he did. And I was glad when Ally told him to leave. She obviously wasn't going to put up with any crap like that. Thatta girl!
If you're a longtime Ally fan, then you know that Ally was actually being a tiny bit hypocritical. It was only two seasons ago when she was kissing Billy -- a married man. Maybe that was even worse, since Georgia was a friend. Ally was in Jamie's place, so it's kind of interesting to see the tables turned and to see Ally in Georgia's place this time around.
Comic relief was thankfully thrown in when Ally went to leave her office, only to open the door and find all her friends fall in, obviously having been eavesdropping in on her conversation with Larry. Ah, what would we do without the gang from Cage & Fish? When they finally all left, leaving Larry in Ally's office all alone, the look on his face was almost heartbreaking. She was gone. Ally was gone and he thought that he had lost her. In a mistake that he made in the matter of five seconds, he had lost the woman he truly loved. Great job, Robert!
And here comes another one of my all-time favorite scenes. Surprisingly enough, it doesn't involve Larry and Ally....... but Larry and Jamie! But it's what Larry says in the scene that makes it so special. First he tries to call Ally but only gets her answering machine. He begs her to answer the phone but either she's really not home, or she refuses to talk to him. He hangs up and is obviously hurt and disappointed in himself. Jamie then walks in and asks him what happened. He tells her that he told Ally that he kissed her and Jamie asks him what he did that for. B*tch! She's obviously not against keeping secrets. Anyway, watching Larry put Jamie in her place is always a delight and what developed here is one of the best Larry scenes yet, and a major breakthrough for us Ally & Larry fans. He tells Jamie that they could never work as a couple. When Jamie asks him why, Larry says, "BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT HER." Well, that sure was a slap in the face to Jamie! But wait, Larry's not finished yet. He acknowledges that because of their son, Jamie will always be in his life, but
If you missed it the first time, don't worry, because he says it again :) Larry says that even if it's over between him and Ally, Jamie wouldn't want to be following her because Ally is IT. My goodness, who knew that a couple of words could have such POWER behind them??? She's it! The one! To hear Larry talk of Ally that way was so sweet and special. I almost wish that Ally could have heard him say that about her. Well, after that awesome scene, I knew that things could only go up. The next morning, Larry shows up at Ally's apartment and the fireworks begin to fly. Larry is still wearing the same clothes as the previous day, indicating that he probably hadn't slept a wink the night before. Ally is still understandably upset about Larry kissing Jamie and lets him have it. I'm proud of her for not backing down and for yelling at him. Remember, she didn't hear what we heard Larry tell Jamie the previous night. It was such an intense scene. I almost felt guilty for eavesdropping in on a couple's fight. Major, major KUDOS to both Robert and Calista for these VERY well-acted scenes. Ally asks Larry why he doesn't just go back to Jamie and his son and he tells her that it's because he loves HER. It catches Ally off-guard for a moment but she still rejects him. That's when Larry starts yelling, "Did you hear what I just said?? I've never loved anybody as much as I love you." Ally starts softening up, and Larry then says the line that has already become a CLASSIC --
Isn't that just the most romantic thing you've ever heard??? It is such an intense, emotional, and powerful display of emotion. When we next see Ally and Larry, she's sitting on the couch and Larry is standing in front of her. They're still trying to work through their problem. I love that. A couple actually talking things through. Ally admits that it's hard for her because she knows that Jamie will always be in Larry's life. He confesses to Ally that he thought about moving to Detroit to be closer to his son, but that he couldn't do it. Why? Because the biggest part of him is in Boston. Ally realizes that he's talking about her. Larry tells Ally that he wrote her a song, and the look on Ally's face tells us that she's thisclose to the point of forgiving him. Me? Yeah...... Larry is my knight in shining armor once again. LOL. Still a little upset that he kissed Jamie, but when he explained that it happened in a fleeting second, mostly because he wanted things to work out for his son..... I could understand that. Okay, so we get to the closing sequence of the show...... and what a closing it is!!! This whole episode is full of CLASSIC Ally & Larry moments!! It is now nighttime and Larry and Ally are sitting at the piano and he is singing her the song he wrote just for her. It's called Chances Are and he sings it beautifully. He messes up a high note and when he points that out, Ally's face finally breaks into a smile and you just know at that very moment that she has finally forgiven Larry. She hugs him and he kisses her. A very sweet scene. And whaddya know??? The next time we see them, they are in bed together!!! Making love!!! I take back any negative comment I might have said about David E. Kelley in my last review. This scene was wonderfully shot, passionate, and perfect. Really warm and fuzzy. The way Larry was looking at Ally was so loving. *Sigh* As the final note of the song plays, the show closes with a shot of Ally & Larry sound asleep in bed together. What could be more wonderful than that? Like I said at the beginning, this so far is my favorite Ally & Larry episode. There were so many classic moments in it. From Larry telling Jamie that Ally is IT..... to Larry telling Ally that he's only at the beginning of loving her...... to him singing Chances Are to Ally......... It's beautiful! They're beautiful. And by the end of this episode, life is beautiful.
