“Next up, Rogers V. Baldwin and Associates. Ally, you take this one.” Richard Fish was in the middle of a Monday morning meeting and assigning cases as usual. “Well what’s the case?” Ally McBeal glanced up at him, a look of question on her face. If she knew Richard the way she thought she did, there was a reason she was getting a case without knowing about it. Usually, that reason was money. “Just a sexual harassment lawsuit, you’ve got the most experience with them.” Richard continued down the line. “Next up…” Ally cut him off. “Richard! Give me the case file,” she demanded. “Elaine already has the file, she’s boning it up for you.” Suddenly Ally made a mad dash for the door; if there was one thing she knew about Elaine it was that she wanted to do all the research and background work just to get credit for it, despite the fact that she didn’t know the first thing about arguing a case. Elaine was sitting at her desk, case open, eyes wide when Ally rushed over and scooped up the file. Ally then ran into her office and slammed the door. Elaine’s eyes were wide open in shock as she stared at the spot where her work was sitting moments ago. When she finally looked up, she heard a scream and then watched as Ally whizzed by her once again and into the conference room. “RICHARD FISH!!!” she yelled at him, picking up a pencil from the conference table and throwing it at him. Richard ducked and the pencil hit the window behind him. “Why the hell am I on this case? Do you have some sort of PLAN you might wanna let me in on?” The rest of the lawyers watched as the volleyball match began. “What?” Richard gave Ally that hurt puppy dog look. Ally stood there for a moment and then stormed over to where Richard was standing. She grabbed him by his ear and dragged him out the door, shoving people and chairs out of her way in the process. When they made it into her office, she shoved Richard inside and slammed the door shut. Richard looked at Ally innocently as Ally glowered right back at him. “LARRY PAUL???!!!” Ally finally yelled, outraged. “Ex-boyfriend, yes, I know this, what about him?” Richard continued to play innocent. “Don’t ‘what about him’ me!” Ally spoke fiercely. “Why the hell can’t you put someone else on the case?” “I told you Ally, you’re the best at sexual harassment cases. Larry’s hard to beat, we need our best.” Richard gave her shoulder a little nudge for support and reassurance in which Ally shoved away. “Nelle has experience, and what about Coretta? At least her and Larry get along!” Ally couldn’t stop yelling. “Ally, what’s the real issue here? It’s been months since he left, almost a year in fact. Why is this such a problem?” Richard studied Ally as her expression changed. “I have no desire to see him is all.” Ally still spoke sternly, but had turned her head and began to bite her bottom lip fretfully. “Didn’t you always want to beat him in court?” Richard teased her. The thought of stomping on top of Larry’s head in court flashed through Ally’s mind and her lips curled up into an evil grin. Ally turned back around to face Richard. “Okay, I’ll bite. What’s your REAL motive for this?” Richard wasted no time at all. “Well the burning question on your mind as well as everyone else’s is why.” Ally rolled her eyes at the mention of everyone else. Richard, no matter how compassionate he may be able to act, was still always thinking of his own curious self. “Why would Larry leave you, and with a note of all things? Not only can you find out and share with the rest of us, but you can try to beat him again in court and uh, make money for the firm.” Ally stayed silent as she thought of what Richard had said. To beat Larry in court would definitely be a huge victory of some sort, but to figure out why...Ally wasn’t sure she was prepared to know, to be quite honest. “Is that all?” Richard was lingering by the door. “Fine, fine,” Ally rolled her eyes and opened the door to let him out causing a cascade of people to fall through her door. “OUT!” she barked. Richard yelped and quickly stepped through the door, stepping on someone’s hair here, a hand there, and someone else’s foot. Everyone got up and slowly walked away, looking sheepish. Ally growled and slammed the door shut. This was going to be a long week.
“Are you okay?” her client asked her. Ally’s head darted to her left and she locked eyes with her client. “What? Oh, hmm, yeah, yes, I, I, I’m fine. What could be wrong? What would be wrong?” Ally rambled, adding her signature nervous laugh at the end of all of that. “Well...” her client was interrupted by a crash. Both she and Ally turned towards the door to the courtroom and found a man kneeling down on the floor gathering papers that had apparently slipped from his grasp. Ally’s heart skipped a beat as the clumsy man stood with the papers in his arms. As he walked by, she held her breath, watching as he walked over to his table. He sat down in a huff and dropped the scattered documents in front of him. Ally couldn’t take her eyes off of him as he reorganized his jumbled documents. She remembered to take a breath. It was a short breath, but a breath nonetheless. Suddenly he looked over and locked eyes with her, his expression not changing. “Ally,” he simply said. Ally couldn’t find her voice. After a slight hesitation, she finally spoke, though her voice was a whisper. “Larry...” They both looked away afterwards, feeling there was nothing left to be said.
Seeing him again, in this courtroom today, is torture. I’m horrified as to what’s going to happen, what’s going to be said, blah blah blah. I mean, what IS there to be said? He left, after I dumped him of course. He really didn’t do anything wrong, but he left me, he didn’t even fight. Why? Why, why, why, why, why?
Seeing her today, after making a fool of myself...talk about a great first impression. Oh wait, I keep forgetting, my first impression for her was that I was the biggest ass. I forgot. Okay, somehow I have to get through this. I have to do my job, which is to get through this case and win. I can’t even look at her without forgetting to breathe. Come to think of it, my heart’s still racing. Why? Why, why, why, why, why?
“He came through the door and somehow all of his papers ended up on the floor. It would have been funny if I hadn’t been so nervous.” Ally was slumped in her chair, playing with an olive on the toothpick from her martini. “Larry as a klutz, wow. It’s hard to imagine that,” Coretta couldn’t help chuckling. “So what else happened?” “Nothing, oh wait, he said my name, and I barely whispered his, but that was all. Nothing, zilch, nada.” Ally slammed the table slightly for effect causing Coretta to jump a little. “Okay,” Coretta had an idea. “Tell me why this is such a big deal,” she demanded. Ally looked at Coretta incredulously. “Are you kidding? He was the best man in my life since Billy and for some reason he’s not there anymore. Wouldn’t YOU see a problem with that if the roles were reversed?” Ally accused. “I truly understand Ally, but there’s something else. There’s something I’m missing and I want to know what it is.” Coretta stayed firm, knowing that was the only way she was going to get anything out of Ally. Ally stared at her olive for a moment, pondering deeply. “Why. I want to know why,” she finally mumbled. “Why what?” Coretta still felt in the dark. “I want to know why he left and why he didn’t fight for me. I know I was the one that dumped him, but he didn’t even try.” Ally managed to speak coherently, somehow. “Do you still love him?” Coretta wasted no time. “What?” Ally shot back, not missing a beat. “How can you ask me that? I’m fine, I’m perfectly perfectly fine.” Ally clamped down on the olive and threw the toothpick on the table. “Do you still love him?” Coretta asked again, knowing Ally hadn’t answered her and she had no intention of letting her weasel her way out of that one. “No,” she answered softly. “I don’t still love him.” She focused in on Vonda’s music, turning her head away from Coretta, sick of the questioning, fearing that something else would come out that she didn’t want to. “Ally,” Coretta wasn’t about to let Ally wiggle. Ally didn’t answer and Coretta leaned on her elbows, thinking. ‘What if?’ Coretta had an idea. “What if...” she started, hoping to get Ally’s attention. Ally’s eyes darted over, but her face didn’t move. “What if what?” she asked, speaking firmly. “What if Larry’s wondering the same things? What if he’s wondering why you didn’t trust him? What if...” Coretta cut herself off, savoring what she was about to propose. “What if you two could have one night? What if you could have one night where all rules are thrown out the window? Anything could go and it would all be spontaneous. What do you think about that?” Coretta narrowed her eyes mischievously, looking at Ally with a half-grin on her face. “One night?” Ally had turned her head by now and was staring at Coretta strangely. “One night for what again?” Ally was hoping she wasn’t following, but had that nagging feeling she knew exactly where Coretta was going. “One night, just one, for anything. If you talk, you talk. If you do anything else, you do whatever. One night to resolve all issues, and in the morning, it will all be over. Spend one night together, and by the morning, everything should be resolved,” Coretta pulled back slightly. “You know, if you do this, you might finally have that peace you’ve been looking for,” she nodded her head matter-of-factly. “One night,” Ally repeated softly, not knowing what to make of it.
“Larry,” Ally raised her voice as she had followed him out of the courtroom and into the hallway. Larry turned around. “Ally,” he returned. “I, I, I, ha-have something I, I, need to,” Ally stopped; she didn’t want to rush anything...or sound like a bumbling idiot. “I’m assuming you want to talk. Ride the elevator down with me, we can talk there,” Larry turned back around and walked towards the elevator, catching the doors as someone was getting out and holding them for the timid Ally that had followed close behind. The doors shut, leaving them alone in solitude. “Okay, what was it you wanted to talk about?” Larry looked over in her direction, trying to not to make dead eye contact, finding that part easy because Ally wasn’t even looking at him. There was silence for a while, and then Ally spoke up silently. “Do you ever wonder why?” Larry knew EXACTLY what she was talking about. “All the time,” he bent his head down and let out a long breath. “Do you wanna know?” Ally started biting her bottom lip. “Yes,” he looked back up and over at her at the same time she looked over at him. Their eyes locked and it was like a flood of emotions coming back to both of them simultaneously; they had always had that effect on each other. “Well I uh, I uh,” Ally couldn’t get it out. “What do you suggest?” Larry tried to help her out, realizing she was struggling. “I uh, I had this idea of, well actually Coretta gave me the idea of...one night,” Ally got out. “One night?” Larry questioned, not quite following what Ally was saying. “One night for us. One night to figure out all the why’s and how’s and just...just one whole night together. And then in the morning, everything would be resolved and that would be that. You and I can go on with our lives, knowing all the answers,” Ally spoke quickly towards the end, splurging through it, thankful to have that out in the open. “One night,” Larry repeated softly.
“Ally, what’s wrong?” “He said yes,” she explained plainly. “Who? What?” Coretta looked at Ally, whose eyes just got wider as an indicator. “Oh!” it dawned on Coretta and she stood up, walking towards Ally. It also dawned on Coretta that instead of looking completely ecstatic, Ally looked petrified. “Well then what’s wrong?” “I didn’t think he’d say yes,” Ally admitted. “Look, Ally, I know you think that he doesn’t still wonder about you or anything like that, but think of it this way, you don’t know what you got till it’s gone. You’re gone, it’s his time to wonder,” she eyed Ally a little bit more skeptically. “You don’t have to do this you know,” Coretta pointed out. Ally banged her head roughly against the door behind her twice, causing Coretta to jump both times. “I can’t keep my cool around him Coretta, I turn into my stuttering, bumbling alter-ego.” Ally pulled away from the door and walked around Coretta towards the window. “I just wish I could stay calm around him,” she looked out the window briefly and then turned back to Coretta who had turned around to watch Ally set off on her tiny journey. “You have no idea of the kind of effect he has on me,” Ally spoke acutely. “Well maybe I don’t know what you’re thinking or feeling for sure, but I can take a good stab or two at it,” Coretta smiled. “So, when are you supposed to...ya know...?” “Tonight,” Ally said distractedly. Coretta was surprised at the quickness. This was definitely something she didn’t expect from Ally. It was one thing to agree to the suggestion, but a full-fledged other to agree to it and set it up for as soon as she did. “Wow,” was all the shocked Coretta could offer. “We’re supposed to wrap up the trial today, so it worked out...perfectly,” Ally hesitated to confirm.
“Hey,” Ally said, sounding out of breath. “Come in,” Ally opened the door wider and moved back with it. Larry walked into Ally’s new home and observed the surroundings. “Wow, this is some place,” he admired her house. “Yeah, well I had an instinct and went with it,” Ally smiled, feeling that sense of pride she always felt whenever she talked about her house. “Let me give you the grand tour,” Ally grabbed Larry’s hand instinctively and led him around the first floor, showing him the living room, the family room, and the kitchen, then proceeding upstairs and showing him all the space up there. They made their way back down the stairs to the first floor and settled on the couch in front of the television. The only thing on that seemed of any interest was some movie with Andrew McCarthy in it. He was some kind of suspect in a murder case this one woman was investigating, but instead of finding him guilty, the woman was being drawn into his web of lies and sex. As weird as it was to be with each other once again in a “relaxing” situation, Ally and Larry were aroused by this movie. The emotions were high and they found themselves being drawn into the movie. In a way, the movie was pulling them closer together. Before Ally knew it, she had pounced on Larry and ripped his shirt open, disregarding the now detached buttons. Larry had Ally’s head in his hands and was kissing her hard, feeling her tongue between his teeth and nipping at it slightly. Ally twitched in pleasure as Larry continued to tease her tongue. When he had let up, she took her mouth and explored the rest of his body. She leaned down to his chest, kissing his happy trail and then found his pecks. She circled them with her tongue and then gnawed on each one slightly with her teeth. Larry convulsed in pain, but found it all the more arousing. Ally took her tongue and traced the happy trail upwards this time, leaving a little wet trail along the way. She found that one spot on his neck that drove him nuts and licked it slightly, then blew on it. Larry shivered in exhilaration, anticipating what she was going to do next. Ally pulled back from him and removed her sweatshirt, revealing a bra in which Larry strategically removed with one hand in a swift move. Larry then began to lap up her skin, kissing and caressing every crevice of her breasts, feeling her shake in bliss. Ally couldn’t take it anymore. She stripped his shirt off of him completely, pulling him close to her. She smiled at the muscles he still had. Ally moved her hands down and slowly unbuckled his belt, removing it in one quick whipping move, causing Larry to jump slightly. Ally laughed furtively, unbuckling his pants, sliding them down slightly, and then using her foot to slide them down the rest of the way. Ally pushed him down on the couch, and then removed her own sweats, proceeding to hop on top of him and take all of him into her in one immediate motion. She wasted no time and the two of them started pumping each other like there was no tomorrow.
Ally stayed looking at the ceiling; her expression remained unchanged. “Why Larry?” “Why what?” Larry replied unwisely. “You know why what.” Ally moved her head to look over at him. “Now that we’ve satisfied our libidos, I want to know why you didn’t stay, why you left as quickly as you did. I want to know why you left without fighting for me. I want to know why I stopped being important,” Ally spoke quickly. “You know why I left Ally,” Larry couldn’t understand why Ally was asking something that, as far as he was concerned, was self-explanatory. “Humor me,” Ally insisted. Larry flipped onto his back and stared up at the ceiling, bringing a hand behind his head to prop it up. “You were the one who dumped me...” Ally cut him off. “How DARE you blame this on ME! I didn’t do ANYTHING wrong!” Ally sat straight up, glaring at Larry now with crazy eyes. “Well, when someone breaks up with you, that’s usually your cue to leave,” Larry clearly explained. “Well I obviously didn’t matter enough to you for you to try and get me back!” Ally accused him. “What was it? Was I too weird, too neurotic, what? Tell me!” Ally howled at him in frustration. “What about YOU?” Larry changed the subject. “Why did YOU dump me? What changed about ME?” Ally was appalled by the way things were going. The change of subject didn’t help matters any. “You were being sex-creamed by that dumb blond bitch!” Ally shouted at him. “How can I be with someone who allows themselves to be sex-creamed by an ex-wife and breaks a date with me to do so??” Ally was breathing heavy by now. “So you couldn’t trust me huh? How the hell do you manage to find anyone if you can’t trust people?” Larry pointed the finger at Ally, figuratively speaking. “I never said I didn’t trust you,” Ally shot back furiously. She was getting sucked into that pattern Larry was so fond of creating. “But you know the saying...‘once a cheater, always a cheater’...” Larry cut her off. “You completely implied that what me and Helena were doing wasn’t innocent and you wouldn’t hear it any other way. How the hell do I deal with something like that? You know, I was feeling pretty shitty too Ally.” “Oh, and the whole world revolves around little old Larry,” Ally rolled her eyes. “Why does everything have to center around you? Don’t you ever think of anyone else but yourself?” Larry was ready to choke something, or somebody. “What the hell gives you the right to ask that question? You’re worse than anyone else I know as far as making things all about you! It’s taken you less than thirty seconds to make a conversation about you, do you realize that? And who the hell put up with it? Who accepted it as you? ME!” Larry was sitting straight up by now, facing Ally, but closer to the edge of the bed than her. “Oh, and that makes it ALLLLLLL better!!!” Ally exaggerated, moving her arms in an out sweeping movement, cutting it close to smacking his head. Larry had had it with Ally. “I can’t believe I was actually going to propose to you!” Larry stormed out of the bed naked, leaving the room in search of his clothes.
By the time Ally went to her door, Larry reappeared. “I just came back up to get my watch,” he gave her an icy cold glare and pushed himself by her and over to the nightstand where he retrieved his watch. He looked at the time to make sure it was right. They shared a look. It wasn’t a pleasant look either. “Why are you so damn childish?” Ally spat out. “THIS coming from miss INSECURE!” Larry shot right back, not missing a beat. “You bastard!” “You bitch!” Larry was staring at Ally, their eyes burning one another, both were breathing heavy. Larry lunged at Ally, grabbing her arms and pulling her towards him roughly, kissing her passionately. They both landed on the bed as she returned his passion. Larry wasted no time on foreplay this time. In less than thirty seconds, his pants were open and the sheet was flung off of Ally in haste. Larry pushed into her with such accuracy and they moved like two monkeys in heat, thrusting against each other, trying to get in, deeper, harder, quicker. They exploded against each other. Passion brought them together, pushed them apart, and brought them together again.
Ally proceeded to make her way down the stairs, peeling her eyes open, praying she’d find Larry somewhere and that he hadn’t fled from her yet again. She slowly padded across the floor into the living room, proceeding to the family room. Just as she was about to enter the kitchen, a soft noise stopped her. She strained her ears to get a better conception of what that noise was. It sounded like crying, but she wasn’t sure. Ally peered into the kitchen slowly and observed a certain Larry Paul, sitting at the kitchen table, hovered over something that was in his hand. Ally couldn’t quite make out what that something was. Larry leaned back in his chair and wiped his eyes, setting down what was in his hands before. Ally noticed that they were pictures. She looked in a little more at the pictures and was able to make herself out as well as Larry. ‘Awww,’ Ally couldn’t help thinking of how cute this sight was. As sad as the scenario was, she couldn’t remember ever feeling more loved than right at that moment. Someone was crying over her, definitely something you don’t see everyday. Larry started whispering to himself. “Oh Ally; if only you knew the agony I’ve been in these past months. If only you knew how much I miss you. If only you knew how much you mean to me. If only you knew how awful I feel for being such a coward,” Larry picked the picture up and held it upward, giving Ally a better perception of what it was of. She recognized it was from her birthday party last year after he had sung to her with Sting. “Oh Ally,” he whispered, softly stroking the picture a couple of times. Ally slowly ambled out into the living room and went to the stereo system placed there. She looked through her CD collection and carefully picked out one CD. She put it in the player, and hit play. Ally went back into the kitchen and approached Larry. She came up behind him and wrapped her arms around his neck. She leaned down and kissed his temple tenderly. Larry didn’t appear to be startled, and he brought his hands up to hold her arms against his chest more firmly where they lay. Ally leaned into his ear and whispered, “Dance with me.” Larry held onto one of her hands and followed the music into the living room, taking Ally along for the ride.
“Hey,” he whispered back, not looking at her. “Whatcha doin’?” she spoke a little louder. “I’m getting dressed, I have go to work,” Larry’s voice was almost monotonous. “Oh,” Ally sounded disappointed and it killed Larry. He turned towards her and locked eyes. “Ally McBeal,” he started, clasping her hands. “I’ll never forget you. I hope you’ll forgive me for being such a coward and I want you to know it wasn’t you. It was never you. I was the one who screwed up.” Larry squeezed her hands and brought them up to his mouth, kissing each one gently. Ally wasn’t really sure what to say. All she could squeak out was, “I’m sorry for not trusting you and questioning your love.” She looked at the clock. “I suppose I better start getting ready for work,” she half-groaned, causing Larry to chuckle a little. Ally pulled herself out of bed and went into the bathroom.
“I’ll never forget last night.” Short, simple, and heartbreaking.
Her thoughts were on the same thing, person rather, that they had been on for the past lonely months. The thoughts were more incessant and Ally found herself wandering towards his apartment. Force of habit you could call it, but Ally caught herself and turned around.
Out of force of habit, Larry found himself strolling towards Ally’s place, only this time it was the new place. He’d already memorized it by heart. You could call it obsession if you want, but it might be more accurate to call it love. When he caught himself, he turned around, slickly trying to make sure no one saw him.
Cause I’ve never touched somebody Their bodies moved at the same rhythm, moving them closer to each other in a slow motion type of way. Like the way I touch your body They were so close, yet so far...... Now I never wanna let your body go
Larry moved in close to Ally and whispered softly. “Just one night Ally, forever.” They clasped hands and took one last look in each other eyes before walking into the night.
