Behind the Unisex Bathroom Door: What's REALLY Crossing DEK's Mind?

It was late and I had to be at FOX early the next morning, but I can't help the fact that I cannot fall asleep. "Ally McBeal" was my dream show. It was a hit...for a while. But ever since Robert Downey Jr. left the show has kind of fallen apart at the seams.

It's like third season all over again. Kinda dull. No one REALLY likes it but Ally fans continue to watch in antipitation for the next season...I'm just afraid that my writer's and I cannot deliver another good season, or a 6th season at all. The whole story line for the 5th season is messed up. A kid? Ally can't have a daughter. It's not ethical. She'll never be able to go to the bar, or date...the whole show has fallen apart.

So I've come to the conclusion: I must get RDJ back. I'll take the chance of having him arrested later on. It would screw us over, but we're screwed over either way.

I'll think about this more in the morning.

Morning came after a long night of contemplating. Just like the associates at Cage/Fish, DEK Productions has a meeting every morning saying things like "first up", "next up", and "moving on".

After a long meeting about Larry Paul's return, everyone went to the set of "Ally" to watch the next episode be filmed. I, on the other hand, had a serious phone call to make.

I tremble as I dial the numbers, praying to god that this isn't a mistake.

"Hello, Robert? It's David Kelly."

"Hey! I've been watching Ally, The Practice, and Boston Public. They seem to be going very well."

"Not ALL of them."

"What do you mean?"

"Robert, it's quite apparent that Ally is going down the tubes. We need you back."

"Oh..."

"We'll pay you double the amount we did last season...and don't you want to look into Calista as a love interest."

"I'm in. Write me a script, send me a check, and I'll be on the set at whatever day you want."

A month passes and it's quite obvious that every website, News Show, and magazine has been all over the return of Larry Paul as Ally's love interest. I was ecstatic when Robert said yes. Perhaps Ally won't fall apart after all.

The word was spreading quickly. Larry was coming back as a love interest...but how? I knew the writers were going to be fresh out of ideas since this is A)short notice, B)a sticky situation, and C) Larry has a LOT of explaining to do, wouldn't you say.

So before my writer's come up with some crappy plot, I thought I'd but in.

I explain, "What about this: Larry, as we know, is a father. Larry must come up to Boston because Sam, his son, has gotten a full scholorship to a fancy smancy school. 'Which school', you might ask? No one elses but Maddy *McBeal*'s. Parent teacher conferences- Ally gets a horrible report from the teacher about Maddy, (that little brat), and as she quickly escapes the classroom in her dazed/pissed off mood, who else would be on the line to see the teacher but Mr. Larry Paul. Larry asks Ally out for coffee. Ally tries to play hard to get, but ultimately fails. Eventually they get married, Sam and Maddy are siblings, and BOOM! There goes my sitcom!"

The room was silent. I had dazzled them with my "impeckable" skill.

As you can imagine, the script was written exactly how I had wished, and taping day had arrived quickly. You could imagine the cast's faces and their excitement when Robert Downey Jr. walked through the door. Everyone, except Calista. You see, their chemistry was AMAZING last season, better than you could ever imagine and MUCH better live than it was on tape....and this made Calista quite uncomfortable.

"Robert! How are you?", Calista said trying not to show the slightest bit of interest.

"Fine, fine. It's nice to be back. And you?"

"Fine."

"How's the kid?"

"Fine."

"How's the job?"

"Fine."

"And how does my ass look today."

"If your expecting me to say fine, you've got another thing coming."

"Oh damn, I thought I would have at least giggled."

Horrified with the blandness of his conversation with Calista, Robert continued to contemplate the situation. He had hoped that their chemistry would be slightly better on tape than it was this morning, and it was. But he still did have feelings for Calista, and was very dissappointed with their first impression this morning.

But you could imagine how Calista felt about the situation. I have concluded that Calista and Ally are totally different people. Calista, being quite sane and the type that keeps things to herself, dreaded the fact that Robert, A DRUGGY, I had the lovebug for her!

The more she thought about him, however, the more she liked him, but continued to despise him off camera anyways.

The taping was impeckable, however, and the plans for Ally and Larry's wedding were definitely on. Only problem: What about all of those characters that we had forgotten such as John, Mark, Ling, and Renee? They, realistically, would NEVER miss Ally's wedding. Somehow, I thought, we must get them back just for that one episode.

Lisa Nicole Carson had promised to show up randomnly during fifth season, so getting her to guest star shouldn't be a problem. Of course she'd be Ally's Bridesmaid.

Peter MacNichol I'm afraid, will be slightly harder to get our hands on. He's gone on this whole rampage about not being appreciated as a real actor on the show and wanting to leave...but he must come to the wedding and the season finale. Ally wouldn't be here today without him.

Lucy Liu...who cares? She never liked Ally anyways, so if she absolutely refuses, I'm not going to put up too much of a fight.

Mark...come on, I don't even know his real name! Who cares about him. We don't need him there.

John and Renee...need to be there.

I finally decided to call all the old stars up and see if they'd be willing to come for the wedding. Though, I couldn't help but ponder what life would be like for Ally after the wedding, and that perhaps we should end the show with the ending and have her live happily ever after.

You see, the show basically consists of dillemmas over men, or atleast that's what the audiences appeal is. I doubt many people watch Ally for the court cases, however amusing they may be. They aren't realistic, so we add sexual content to make people interested. But if Ally is married, the whole concept is lost. This is what I had to present to the cast, and they abruptly agreed. The show was at the end of the line, and what better way to end it then Ally with the love of her life?

At the taping, I could see that Calista wasn't very interested in Robert, and I couldn't blame her. He was a very unstable man, despite all the rehab. His acting career could be ending, and hers on the other hand will be rejuvinated with this new free time she'll have after the show. I couldn't help but wonder what Calista's next job will be. I hope she doesn't find it hard to find a new one. It's almost like everyone connects Calista with Ally, as if they're the same people. Ironically enough, they couldn't be more different. I hope casting directors will figure that out.

Days pass and we've finally finished cutting the last Ally McBeal episode. As I, the cast, and the crew watched the final episode, I started to cry. Not because it was the end for me, because it definitely was not with 2 other prime time series thriving, but more because niether of the other series had the flare that Ally McBeal had. Sure, they had their good points, but I know that out of all the things in my life I've done, I've never had as much gratification as I have had doing Ally McBeal. I'll sure miss it.
