The dictionary defines respect as:

1.A feeling of appreciative, often deferential regard; esteem. See Synonyms at regard.
2.The state of being regarded with honor or esteem.
3.Willingness to show consideration or appreciation.
4.respects. Polite expressions of consideration or deference: pay one's respects.
there are many different and varied facets to the definition of this word, each one varying upon the person defining it... in my opinion respect is something that should not be freely given... good manners and politeness shouldnt be misunderstood as respect.... often in this lifestyle i have seen these two words confused and i have even seen respect demanded and tried One trying to force one to "respect them" due to thier status... *shaking my head* this is not respect....One that i used to belong to said it the best i think....
Master Dave said: "Those that demand respect seldom earn it and Those that earn respect rarely demand it"
i find this to be so completely true... and i feel that respect is something that has to be earned.... it should not be given away freely or taken for granted.. much the same as the concept of submission *soft smile*
Here is what O/others in the room had to say about respect:
alexs~ "Respect is something that can be given freely...but had best be cherished for it can be taken away just as quickly..."
Wildrose~ "..on the subject of respect, and from witnessing recent events Downstairs, an opinion of Mine is that, respect must
include respect that Oothers may have differing opinions than Yyour own, and expressing those opinions, in a considered
manner, does not constitute disreprect…"
Streetwise Hercules~ "…Respect is an intangible that O/one earns from A/another. At first Y/you must take O/one at T/their face value and
accept T/them for who T/they are. Don't try to change or mold T/them into something T/they are not. Seek first to
understand then be understood…"
Llynx~ "….My view is slightly different. I've noticed... here more so than other places, perhaps because of this place's special
dynamic... respect being used as a tool ... a dangling carrot on a stick.
IMo, respect is something due to all living creatures, in that every P/person deserves to be treated with decency and
dignity."
Twisted~"I believe that respect is something thatshould be given to A/all in the beginning and in time and proof that the person that
it is gave to is worthy of that respect that you give them and show if not the the loss of that respect!!!*S*"
Falcon~ "…What does respect mean to Me? Well it is many things.
To Me it is how You carry Yourself and How You act towards others. It is allowing another to have different view then
Your own and still treating them as if they are human. It is the basic acceptance of Someone for who they are without
trying to change them. It is the open admiration for a task performed by O/one the appreciating the fact they have done
so.
I also believe before You can show or recive respect from/to other first You must respect Yourself and all You stand
for. Oh and this is My short version ~laugh~.."
Socrates~"Respect is the feeling Ttwo Ppeople have for Eeach
Oother that allows for Tthem to always know that the bond
and feelings go to an understanding of complete trust and of complete and total acceptance for Wwho Oone is, how Oone lives
their life."
SnowMaster~ "Basic respect is a necessary way of social communication formality that ensures a harmonic coexistance - people simply have to accept that boundary condition or it will cause stress situations. True respect is something you can feel and something of great value, based upon many issues like age, wisdom, responsibility, love or even friendship. It makes life brighter and a D/s relationship more efficient."
