*The scene begins in Terri's office in Ward 17. Terri and Mitch are conversing about a patient.*

"Mitch! Why are you always doing this? You know, I can't spend my entire day covering your arse for you, while you sneak around hiding patients from admin!"

"I'm sorry Terri, but I just had to. This kid, he has nothing I had to help him. I couldn't turn my back. Look Terri, if this is how you want it, I'll never do it again." Mitch said as he looked down into his hands.

Terri looked into Mitch's beautiful blue eyes and laughed. "Mitch, you know that's a lie, so why bother! This is ME you're talking to you know."

"I know." Mitch returned the smile. He stared at her for a minute, remembering the good times they used to have. And as he looked at her now, he knew his feelings hadn't changed, and probably never would. She was so beautiful, so passionate about life would they still be together if they'd had the chance? It was a question Mitch knew he could never answer.

It was Terri's voice that broke his reverie. "Mitch? Mitch? Is there something wrong? Did you hear what I just said?"

"Oh, sorry Terri I, uh I was just thinking about old times. Just a question do you ever wonder that if things were different, we'd still be together? Probably married with kids by now, the way we'd always planned it. It's funny isn't it? One little mistake changes things forever."

"I know but I try not to think of it Mitch. Our relationship was in the past, and that's where it must stay. You're married to Rose now, and you have a beautiful baby daughter. You and I our relationship is nothing now but a memory you and I share." Terri paused here, thinking of the right way to express her feelings. As she did, she rose and moved to the window, her backed now turned to Mitch. It had just begun to storm, and she hoped that it would clear quickly enough as she had to ride her bike home. When she was sure of her words, she began again. "Sure Mitch, we could reminisce about the past, about what went wrong, but what good would that do us? And of course I still love you I'll never stop loving you but this is what must be." She turned back to look at Mitch, who had his eyes down.

"But Terri, I think I made the biggest mistake of my life when I lost you."

Terri quickly turned back towards the window as a tear slipped silently down her cheek. She felt the same way. She'd lie in bed at night thinking about him his quick sense of humour that always made her laugh, no matter what mood she was in; the compassion he showed towards his patients; the way he always show up unshaven, so now it had come to the point where when he did shave, he looked funny. Oh yes, she knew that losing him was a mistake, one that they'd pay for forever. But they both had their own lives now, and there was no changing that.

"Mitch, we are two different people now. Our lives have completely changed. There's no turning back."

"I guess." There was an awkward pause, and Mitch was the first to speak again. "Well, I guess I should head home. I've finished my workload for today. Terri, how are you getting home? You can't ride in this storm. Let me take you home, please?"

"Oh no Mitch, I couldn't ask you to do that. It's out of your way."

"It's fine Terri. Please, it would make me feel better knowing that you had gotten home safely."

"Ok, thanks." Terri said hesitantly. She had to stop refusing his offers. They were friends now not lovers and she didn't want to lose his friendship.

Mitch's Car

"Thanks for doing this for me Mitch, I do appreciate it, really."

"I know you do."

They drove along without talking for a while. The radio played in the background, but it could barely be heard because of the hard drumming of the rain on the car.

"Jesus, it's getting hard to see I think I might pull over until it eases is that alright with you Terri?"

About five minutes later the rain had died down to a drizzle, and Mitch pulled out onto the road again. The conversation between Mitch and Terri was flowing freely again, both talking about the patients they had seen that day.

Suddenly they were both blinded by a pair of headlights from a car driving on the wrong side of the road. The next few moments travelled by in slow motion. There was a screech from the tyres as Mitch tried desperately to brake, a crunch of metal from when the two cars collided and then an ear-piercing scream from Terri as Mitch's 4WD flipped and rolled alond the bitumen. Then everything went black.
