WHEN TIDES TAKE A TURN

Disclaimer : I don't own any of these characters, they belong to channel 7.

Bron didn't bother hiding her disapproval of being at work. "I can't believe I have to work another week before they will give me holidays" she whined, "what is wrong with those people?" Ben rolled his eyes at her as they went through their routine checks of the ambulance. "I mean why can't they see what they are doing is", Ben interrupted her "well guess what? You are at work today, so how about just concentrating on the job". Bron flashed him a filthy look before moving to the front of the ambulance. She wondered if this week was ever going to end and hoped that Terri was able to find her a place in Ward 17 before this gruelling ordeal would be over.

Ben raced around the front of the ambulance "we have a call" he gasped. Bron jumped into the front of the ambulance. She slumped into the seat and looked away from Ben as he started the ambulance and began driving. "How bad can it be?" Ben joked. Bron ignored him and continued to look at nothing in particular out the window. Eventually Ben gave up trying to make small talk with her, he was out of words to say. The tension was growing between them and both were feeling extremely uncomfortable.

The ambulAnce screamed to a halt outside a large circus tent at the showground. Bron turned to Ben "is this some sort of joke?" He shook his head, "this is it, this is where we were called". Bron and Ben took their gear out of the ambulance and entered the tent. There was a screaming woman pointing to the top of the tent, she was yelling something about a child stuck on a trapeeze. Ben calmed her down to find out that a 14 year old boy who had been practising on the trapeeze had gotten stuck up the top and cut his arm badly. He was screaming and people were gathering around Bron and Ben begging them to help. Ben called ambulance rescue only to find out that they were already tied up at another job. "Typical" he muttered to himself as he pulled Bron aside, "I'm going up, I want you to try and get onto rescue when they have finished that other job". Bron was relieved that Ben hadn't suggested that she climb up that wobbly ladder to get to the child. But deep in her heart she also realised that he would never do that because he knew of her fear of heights.

Ben pulled an oxy-kit onto his back and stuffed some other gear from the kit into the backpack. He secured it around his waist and approached the ladder. The wind was picking up outside and the ladder was shaking, along with the canvas of the tent. He felt a rush of fear soar through his body, but pushing it aside, he grabbed the ladder. The child's screaming was getting louder as the trapeeze and beam he was trapped on rocked in the wind. Ben knew he needed to get up there fast, so he climbed quicker. As he was half-way up the ladder, he looked down to see Bron standing below, fingers crossed and a scared look on her face. He smiled at her, her expression didn't change. Ben continued to climb to the top of the tent, the wind was whistling and the child was still screaming. He carefully crawled across the beam to where the child was trapped and introduced himself. Damien was bleeding very badly from his right arm and Ben applied some bandages and gave him some oxygen to help with the onset of shock. He looked down but couldn't see Bron, he started to worry, 'where was she?' He reached for his radio, but the beam was very small for two people and the equipment and the radio slipped out of his hands. As Ben reached to stop the radio from falling, he slipped off the beam, against some other wood and wire hanging from the beam, cutting himself very badly across the abdomen and his upper arm. Ben cried out before hitting his head and falling unconscious on a lower beam.

From below, Bron screamed as she watched her partner fall and injured himself. Some equipment fell from the beam and landed on the ground with a thud. Bron tried to radio rescue again, they assured her that they would get there as soon as they could. Suddenly Bron felt an intense pain as she watched Ben so helpless and hurt. She looked around her at the faces who were expecting their own child to be rescued, she couldn't let them down, and moreso, she couldn't let Ben down, after all, he had saved her life.

Bron was shaking as she approached the ladder. Her trembling hands took a grip of the rungs and she pulled herself up bit by bit. As she got higher and higher, her grip became tighter, turning her knuckles white. She tried hard not to look down as the thought of being up so high made her nauseous. When Bron reached the half-way mark, she was sobbing so much that the tears were blocking her view. She used her shoulder to try and wipe away the tears. Damien had settled down since Ben had arrived on the scene, he took the mask off and yelled to Bron "Your friend needs you". Bron tried to smile as she yelled back "I'm getting there". Feeling more confident, she climbed faster until she found herself at the top on the beam. She crawled very carefully to where Damien and Ben lay. "You ok?" she asked Damien, "yeah" he replied "you better help him", he pointed to Ben lying below on a smaller beam, cut and bruised from the wire and wood that interfered with his fall.

"Ben.....Ben...wake up, it's me, Bron", Bron tried not to let the fear sound in her voice. Her call remained unanswered. "Shit", she complained as she carefully climbed onto the lower beam, "don't move" she instructed Damien as she reached Ben. "Ben!" Bron shook him hard, there was a little murmur. It was impossible to move him onto his side so Bron picked up some of the bandages which lay around and padded Ben's wounds. Ben was starting to wake, in the distance, the sound of sirens could be heard. "Rescue are nearly here Ben, hang in there", Bron stroked his face and her tears made patterns on him. Ben opened his eyes and looked at her, she reached down and hugged him. Bron couldn't hold it back any longer, she cried out loud, and Ben tried to hug her but the pain was too intense. "Ben, I thought I had lost you", she reached down and kissed him on the lips.

It wasn't long before the ambulance rescue guys had brought the three of them back down to earth from the towering circus tent. Ben and Damien were taken to hospital by ambulance and Bron was left alone. She walked around the circus reflecting on what had just happened, deciding that the first person she should talk to should be Terri because perhaps ambulance is the career for her after all. And then Ben, because perhaps he is the perfect partner...........................
